Curious about Starfield companions and crew members? Like all of Bethesda’s previous RPGs, Starfield features a gaggle of different NPC characters who will follow the player on request, helping out in combat, exploration, and, of course, getting stuck in doorways.

Here’s a breakdown of all the Starfield companions and their unique traits and abilities. Just like previous Bethesda games, with one of these allies at your side, you’ll be far better equipped to explore Starfield planets and star systems across the galaxy, from the prosperous New Atlantis City on Jemison to the wild safari of Gagarin.

There are five main companions you can recruit in Starfield:

  • Andreja
  • Barrett
  • Sam Coe
  • Sarah Morgan
  • Vasco

Each of these companions have different skills and perks, too, which make them better suited to different roles. Some also possess unique abilities. Let’s go over each of them one-by-one.

Andreja

  • Location – You’ll meet Andreja for the first time as part of the Into the Unknown main story quest.

As muted as she is mysterious, Andreja is a battle-hardened former devote of the Great Serpent. She’s the newest member of Constellation and one usually summoned for the most daring missions the group takes on.

These are Andreja’s skills:

  • Stealth – Rank 4
  • Particle Beams – Rank 3
  • Energy Weapon Systems – Rank 2
  • Theft – Rank 2
Starfield companions: Barrett in The Lodge on New Atlantis.

Barrett

  • Location – Barrett is probably the easiest companion to find, as you’ll meet him during Starfield’s opening mission.

Barrett is one of the first people you’ll meet in Starfield, coming to find out on Vectera during the tutorial section. He’s an adventurer and scientist, and a well rounded companion. He’s also a member of Constellation, with a mind for engineering and mechanics.

These are the skills Barrett has:

  • Gastronomy – Rank 1
  • Robotics – Rank 2
  • Particle Beam Weapon Systems – Rank 3
  • Starship Engineering – Rank 4

These skills mean that Barrett has the ability to craft high-quality meals which will provide greater benefits when consumed. He also boosts your damage against robots, and improves your ship’s weapons and designs. With this versatility, Barrett is a reliable follower to have close at hand if you like to dive head-first into situations when you’re out exploring the galaxy.

Sam Coe

  • Location – You’ll meet Sam Coe when you visit The Lodge in New Atlantis for the first time during The Empty Nest.

An ex-space cowboy, Sam Coe heralds from the territory of the Starfield Freestar Collective faction, though now works with Constellation. He’s a measured and stoic individual, but is one of the Starfield romance options, should you want to explore that path. He’s accompanied by his daughter Cora, who’ll follow you around as well if you choose Sam as a companion.

These are the Skills Sam Coe is working with:

  • Geology – Rank 1
  • Payloads – Rank 2
  • Rifle Certification – Rank 3
  • Piloting – Rank 4

With these skills, Sam has spectacular ability as a pilot, making him a great addition to your Starfield crew. He’s also well-suited for long-range combat. If taking a measured approach to your combat and exploration is more your style, the ex-space cowboy might be the pick for you.

Sarah Morgan

Sarah Morgan is the leader of the Starfield Constellation faction, a group of intrepid space explorers who are key to Starfield’s main campaign. She’s confident and headstrong, guided by a desire for answers and a hunger for discovering the universes mysteries.

Here are the skills that make Sarah Morgan stand out:

  • Botany – Rank 1
  • Leadership – Rank 2
  • Lasers – Rank 3
  • Astrodynamics – Rank 4

Being an ex-soldier and current leader of a faction, it’s little surprise that Sarah is good with laser weapons, and competent with leadership. Her scientific acumen also make her abilities well suited to deep scientific research, and she’ll be a good choice of companion for anyone who likes to be meticulous with their exploration and scientific discovery.

Vasco

  • Locaiton – You’ll meet Vasco at the very start of the game during the One Small Step main story quest.

Vasco is a bipedal robot owned by Constellation, initially loyal to Barrett, but soon becomes loyal to the player at the start of the game.

  • Aneutronic Fusion – Rank 1
  • Shield Systems – Rank 2
  • EM Weapon Systems – Rank 1

All Starfield crew members

Aside from the five main Starfield companions, there’s a long list of optional companions. These characters can be recruited throughout the Settled Systems but don’t play a major role in the game’s main story. They’ll still accompany you as you explore and fight if asked.

Starfield crew members are a type of NPC that can be hired to work aboard your starship, or at your Starfield outposts. Crews are essential to keeping large ships or installations working effectively, with certain modules even requiring crew members to function. If you want to build large starships or operate outposts that can produce a lot, then you’re going to need a crew. Much like companions, it may be possible to use the Starfield romance system with some crew members too.

How to get rid of crew members in Starfield

If you decide you no longer want a crew member, you’ve got a few options. The first and most effective way is a permanent removal via lethal force. i.e. kill them. While certainly effective, it’s probably not a great look for your character to go around executing individuals who become redundant.

The second option is to reallocate them somewhere, perhaps to a distant outpost you hardly think about. True, this isn’t actually getting rid of them, but given that you can link up outposts to form trade routes, it’s more likely a waste to get rid of them completely. Thirdly, you can get rid of them through dismissal dialogue option, available by interacting with them

Where can you hire crew members in Starfield?

You can find crew members across the settled systems. While there are a lot of NPCs you can bring on as crew, you’ll often have to complete quests or conversations to unlock the crew option. Spaceports, bars, cities – all these feature NPCs you can draft in to your crew. But you’re equally likely to stumble across potential crew members in the strangest places. Heller, a ballistics expert, can be found in the wreckage of a starship for example.

You’ll also find a few on all the major planets and when taking on local quests on New AtlantisJemisonCydonia, and Mars. Sarah Morgan, for example, is a member of Constellation, and following the Constellation main story questline is key to unlocking her as a potential crew member.

By taking the Hero Worshipped trait during character creation, the Adoring Fan will occasionally spawn and give you gifts. By talking to him, you’ll be able to recruit him to your crew to work explore space alongside you.

The best method for crew member recruitment, however, is through companions. You can only have one companion adventuring with you at any given time, but you can always bring others on as valuable crew members. Even more importantly, companions all have four traits, ranked one to four, which give them special abilities and competencies. By comparison, most other crew members only have two or three traits, so companion crew members get a distinct edge.

Are companions and crew members different?

Companions are your go-to adventure buddies, but they’re not the only NPCs you’ll be able to bring along for the ride. While you can only have a single companion with you at a time, you can hire NPCs as crew members to help you out. They can be assigned to your ship or work in your outposts to help mine resource and manufacturer goods for sale.

All the companions can be hired as crew members. It’s important to note though that not all crew members can be companions. Miner Heller is one example. If you want a full breakdown of how crew members differ and where to find them, we’ve got you covered in another guide.

That covers the Starfield companions. Check out where to get the Bounty Hunter spacesuit, and how to solve the Lair of the Mantis puzzle. For quests, take a look at the Sabotage, Delivering Devils, Absolute Power, Surgical Strike, Operation Starseed, and Entangled missions.
