Tekken 8 ranks list – all ranks and colour tiers

Tekken 8 has an all-new ranked system, and with that comes a set of new ranks. Many make a return from Tekken 7, while others are completely new, so even if you’re a returning player you might not be familiar with everything here.

Knowing how the ranks work as a whole is a great way to see not just where you’re placed in the grand scheme of things, but lets you set goals of what ranks you want to reach as well. And most importantly, it lets you brag to your friends once you know exactly how many ranks above them you are.

Tekken 8 ranks and ranking system explained

Ranks are awarded when you play in either online Ranked matches, or for playing in offline matches in Arcade Battle and Arcade Quest. Every time you win a match, you’ll gain a certain number of points, and every time you lose a match, you lose points. When you cross a certain threshold, you’ll either rank up or rank down into a new rank. The higher rank you are, the more points are on offer, meaning your wins net you more points and losses cost you more than they would at lower ranks.

In online Ranked matches, the number of points you gain is determined by your rank and Tekken prowess relative to your opponent. You gain and lose the most points for beating someone at the same rank as you. For each rank that separates you, the number of points on offer decreases, until you are more than three ranks apart, where the points on offer reach their lowest.

Additionally, if you play against someone with a higher Tekken prowess than you, you’ll gain slightly more points for winning and lose slightly fewer points for losing. The opposite is true for playing someone with a lower Tekken prowess than you.

Up until the Warrior rank (9th dan), you don’t lose any points for losing matches. That means up until this point, you can’t be demoted. However, as soon as you reach the yellow ranks, you will start losing points, and can be demoted back into the green ranks if you lose too much.

Each character also has their own rank. You can be a God of Destruction on one character and a Fujin on another, so it’s not as daunting to start learning a new character. So if you’re been using a top-tier fighter like Jun and want to try out someone like Yoshimitsu for kicks, you won’t be up against players who are as high a rank as your main.

What is Tekken prowess?

Tekken prowess is essentially a way of determining how good you are at the game to make matchmaking fairer. This is determined by your collective ranking across all characters. For example, if you have two characters at the highest rank, you’ll have significantly more Tekken prowess than someone with only one character.

Base Ranks

When you reach a certain rank with your main, any fighters you haven’t used yet are automatically placed in a specific base rank. This means if you want to start learning someone new, you won’t necessarily have to start at the bottom, and can immediately play against stronger players.

This is to prevent better players from sandbagging in lower ranks. Someone who is top rank as Reina is likely to also be good at Dragunov even if they’re fairly different characters, so putting them at the same level as someone whose highest rank is lower would be unbalanced. Thus Tekken prowess makes it so the lower ranked player won’t lose as many points if they lose to a better player.

All Tekken 8 ranks in order

In total, there are 30 ranks in Tekken 8, down from 37 in Tekken 7. Each rank apart from Beginner has its own ‘dan’, which denotes what number rank it is, going from 1st dan at the bottom to 30th dan at the top. These ranks are split into different tiers, which are generally referred to by their colour (e.g. Green ranks, Red ranks, etc.), but are sometimes also referred to by a shared name (e.g. Ruler ranks).
