Before you can start learning moves and combos, it’s important to know Tekken notation. This helps quickly explain specific inputs in one or two characters instead of having to write out the full thing every time. Our move list and combos use the notation below, so make sure to refer back to it to know exactly what to do.

Azucena combos

Azucena has some incredible launchers, giving her some pretty fantastic combo game. And with a fairly similar combo route no matter what launcher you use, she’s pretty beginner friendly too. Here are our favourite bread and butter Azucena combos:

  • Combo 1: f, f3, b2, d2, 3, 4, 1, 2, f2, 1, 4
  • Combo 2: u/f4, d2, 3, 4, 1, 2, f2, 1, 4
  • Wall Carry Combo: d/b1+2, b2, d2, 3, 4, 1, 2, DASH, WR3, 2, d/f1, 2, 1+2
  • Wall Splat Combo: 1, 2, f, f3, d/f1, 2, 1+2

Alex’s Advice

Azucena has plenty of Counter Hit options that open opponents up to huge combos. 1+2, BT1+2, and 1, 4, 1 strings are all powerful options that can catch spammy opponents off guard.

Azucena strategy

Azucena is a character with plenty of strong frames, great mixups, and a few powerful combos. She rewards patient play, using her strong pokes to get a bit of damage after blocking. Use spacing to bait your opponent into whiffing, before using any of wealth of launchers such as u/f3, d/f2, or f, f3 to launch the other player into a strong combo.

That being said, don’t shy away from abusing her WR3, 2. This is plus on block (although it can be ducked) and can be a great way of finishing off a round. If it hits, you win, and if it’s blocked, you can follow up with a quick throw to do the same.

Her mixups are powerful, but are often unsafe on block so shouldn’t be used too often, especially out of her Libertador stance. Instead, make good use of her lows like d/b3 to repeatedly chip away at your opponent. Your backturned 3 leads into Libertador, and your Libertador 3 leads back into backturned, letting you put your opponent in a mixup blender for massive damage.

She has some great counter hit options. A quick d/f1, 4, 1 string will catch opponents off guard if they like to press buttons, but the final hit can be ducked and punished by better opponents.

Her Heat Smash deals huge damage and is +15 on block, leading into Libertador for a free mixup. Follow up with a d4, 4, a 1+2, or even a throw depending on what you think your opponent will react with. Just be aware that you cannot block while in Libertador, and if your opponent is in Rage, they can hit a free Rage Art on you, potentially ending the round.

This should help you get started as Azucena and picking up a few wins with her. If you’re looking for some more guides, check out our Tekken 8 Reina and Tekken 8 Victor guides for a look at the other newcomers to the roster.
