Need to upgrade weapons in Lies of P? Weapon upgrading is essential in Neowiz’s Souls-like RPG if you want to go toe-to-toe with many of the game’s more demanding enemies. But how does weapon upgrading work?
We’re going to cover how to upgrade weapons in Lies of P here, as well as where to find upgrade materials, and the best farming spots for Hidden Moonstones. Be sure you’re familiar with the best weapon combos and where to get weapons before you start spending your hard-earned upgrade materials though.
How to upgrade and alter weapons in Lies of P
To upgrade weapon blades or handles in Lies of P, speak to Eugenie in Hotel Krat and open the relevant menus from there. You can find her sitting in the workshop on the left hand side of the entrance to the courtyard with the training puppets. As we mentioned, upgrading a weapon has two components. You can upgrade both the blade, and upgrade – or alter – the handle.
How to upgrade a weapon blade
To upgrade a weapon blade, you’ll need to make use of special materials, as well as the game’s main currency, Ergo. For the first 4 levels, you’ll need Hidden Moonstones as your upgrade material. These are a semi-rare material found throughout the early game. Opening chests, picking up rare loot, expanding supply shops, and defeating powerful enemies around the first three or four levels are all ways to come across these, but they do start becoming more common once you get past King’s Flame Fuoco.
To get to a plus 6 weapon, Crescent Moonstones are needed. These have the same sort of finding conditions as Hidden Moonstones, only they begin to appear later into the game.
How to alter a weapon handle
Weapon handles work a little differently, as you’re not technically upgrading them, but rather, altering their properties. This is still done through Eugenie, through clicking into the “Alter Handle” menu instead of the “Upgrade Weapon” one.
The handle is the component of the weapon that controls what stats the weapon scales with, and alteration allows players to change these scaling stats. Keep in mind though that altering scaling to favour one stat will worsen the handle’s scaling with other stats. Handle alteration is done through several different types of cranks, a rare item type you can find throughout the world. There are four types of crank in total.
- Motivity crank (strength scaling)
- Technique crank (dexterity scaling)
- Advance (arcane/special scaling)
- Balanced crank (used to reset alterations to a handle and restore default scaling)
As mentioned, all cranks can be found as rare items in the world, and from a few other sources. They aren’t common in the early game though. In our playthrough for our Lies of P review, we found our first Technique crank in a back corner of the rafters above the Venigni Control Room – the one with the giant vat of acid.
You can also buy a limited number, however. After finishing the factory and rescuing Venigni, he’ll rebuild his butler puppet, Pulcinella, who sells one of each type of Crank. You can find them both at Hotel Krat after defeating Fuoco.
How to upgrade boss weapons
Like regular weapons, boss weapons can be upgraded by Eugenie at Hotel Krat, though with a few key differences. First of all, boss weapons are single-component, meaning they don’t have separate blades and handles. As such you upgrade the weapon as a whole package. Secondly, they use a special type of upgrade material, even rarer than Crescent Moonstones.
Boss upgrade materials are called Dark moon Moonstone of The Covenant. These are remarkably uncommon until much later in the game, and you’ll only begin finding them from Moonlight Town onwards.
Best Moonstone farming spots
As you progress in the game, upgrade materials that were previously a lot rarer start to become more common. This is great news if your weapons are lagging behind a bit in power. There are two ways to farm Moonstones, and first we’re going to cover the best places to farm them naturally in the world.
For farming Hidden Moonstones, your best spots to visit would be one of the following.
- Malum District. The route around this district effectively turns into a large loop once the shortcuts are unlocked, making it a streamlined way to farm enemies with a minor chance of dropping the stones.
- St Frangelico Cathedral Library. An enemy-dense area, farming around here is straightforward and quick, though not especially common for Moonstones.
- Pilgrim’s Path. Though a bit of a stretch, this path is littered with a variety of enemies, so running the gauntlet usually guarantees at least a handful of Moonstones.
Best way to get Moonstones in Lies of P
As we mentioned, there are two great ways to farm Moonstones in Lies of P. One is to farm them directly, but the other is to simply buy them once you’ve found the Krat Supply Box. When you find this box, you can hand it in to Polendina, the receptionist puppet at Hotel Krat. Doing so will permanently expand his shop inventory, and you’ll be able to buy an unlimited supply of Hidden Moonstones from him in exchange for Ergo. Where to find the first Krat Supply Box for Polendina
To unlock this second, better way of indirectly farming Moonstones, you’ll first need to pick up the Supply Box in question. Follow these steps below to track it down.
- Start at the St Frangelico Cathedral Chapel Stargazer.
- Head up to the top level via the gauntlet and the rafters or the shortcut.
- Head into the room where a powerful decayed enemy drops down.
- Defeat this decayed enemy to open up the barred door on the right hand wall of the room.
- Head through this door, then right again through an opening in the barred walls of the corridor.
- Open the chest at the far side of this annex to find the Krat Supply Box within.
