Ships in Starfield are a key part of gameplay. Players can buy, sell, steal, and modify spaceships and use them to fly around the galaxy, explore distant planets, and fight off other ships in battle. Players will gain access to their first ship early in the story, but there are many more to find out in the Settled Systems. Players can own up to 8 ships.

Ship stats

Any spaceship in Starfield will have several stats that show what it's capable of. These can be increased or decreased by replacing individual ship modules.

One of the most important ones is the ship's class: A, B, or C. This is determined primarily by a ship's Reactor module, and will dictate not just what other modules can be installed, but whether the player can fly the ship at all. At the beginning of the game, players can only fly A-class ships, but by levelling up the Piloting skill they can gain access to higher classes of ship.

Most stats can be found in the Ship menu screen, though some only show up when going into the Ship Builder screen at a Ship Technician. The currently known ship stats are:

  • Fuel: The amount of Helium-3 fuel your ship can hold.
  • Hull: Your ship's health. Once shields fail, attacks will damage your hull.
  • Shield: Your ship's shield strength.
  • Cargo: How much you can store in your ship's cargo bay.
    • Shielded Capacity: The chances of any contraband cargo getting picked up by scanners.
  • Reactor: The total amount of power available to your ship.
  • Max Crew: The maximum number of crew members you can have on the ship.
  • Jump Range: How far the ship can travel in one grav jump.
  • Mobility: How agile your ship is - high Mobility will allow for quicker turns.
  • Top Speed: The highest speed your ship can reach.
  • Weaponry
    • LAS: The power level of laser weapons
    • BAL: The power level of ballistic weapons
    • MSL: The power level of missile weapons
    • PAR: The power level of particle beam weapons
    • EM: The power level of EM weapons
  • Value: The monetary value of your ship.
  • Mass: How much your ship weighs.

Ship customization

Any ship you own can be customized and upgraded by visiting a Ship Technician at a spaceport or Outpost.

The default way of customizing your ship is by swapping out or installing new ship modules, but players can also access a more in-depth Ship Builder tool by pressing B (X on controller). This will allow them to manually move parts around and dabble in more granular spaceship design, but could result in incorrectly installed parts or a ship being made incapable of flight. If this happens, errors will pop up to encourage rectifying the situation. Players can also run a flight check at any time by pressing C (Start on controllers) to get feedback on any issues with their design.
