Creating a character is one of the first things players will be asked to do in Starfield. After completing the initial introductory sequence on Vectera, the player will be taken to the character creation screen after a brief conversation with Supervisor Lin and Heller. Here, players can customise how their character looks, their initial skills, and more.

The cosmetic elements of character creation - i.e. designing a character's face and body - can be changed later on in the game by visiting certain shops, such as Enhance on New Atlantis.

Biometric ID

The first part of the character creation process is selecting a Biometric ID. This is a simple step - each of the 40 generated Biometric ID options is essentially a template to start from for the rest of character creation. Players are encouraged to pick one that looks close enough to the character they want, as they will be able to tweak many variable in the following stages.

Body

After selecting a Biometric ID, players can change the way their character's body looks by tweaking certain parameters.

  • Body style: Moving the dot around the concentric circles will allow players to change their character's body shape to some combination of 'muscular', 'thin', and 'heavy' attributes.
  • Body type: There are two options here, modelled on traditionally gendered body types.
  • Walk style: There are two options here as well.
  • Skin tone: There are several options to choose from here which affect the shade of the character's skin.

Face

After settling on a body type, players can customise their character's face, with a numerous different parameters to play with. Some characteristics can be further refined beyond the initial slider - these are marked with a * below.

Background

Main article: Background
Choosing a background is a key part of character creation. It not only provides a little bit of backstory for the player character, but also dictates the first three skills that they will gain, which can have a significant effect on the early game. A character's background cannot be changed after finishing character creation.

Traits

Main article: Traits
Traits are an optional part of character creation. Players can select up to three traits, each of which will confer both a useful bonus and an unfortunate downside. Any trait can be removed after character creation, but no new traits can be added except through console commands.

Name and pronouns

Once a player is happy with their character, they can finish the process. At this point, they will be asked to name their character and choose their preferred pronouns.
