These trailers span a total of five years, covering a vast series of game aspects. We’ll go through them one-by-one next, giving you a bit of insight into what to expect before you watch.
This was the first true glimpse we got of Starfield. Releasing all the way back in June 2018, this short, one minute teaser officially announced the project and its ongoing development, beginning the long journey to get here. It was – and is – the first new universe from Bethesda Game Studios in 25 years, setting it apart from the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series in a big way.
It would be quite some time before we got more news on Starfield, as the project, like most, saw significant delays and difficulties during the pandemic. In June 2021 though, the second teaser trailer for Starfield came out. This one was a bit more substantial, giving us a look at a starship interior and exterior, as well as some Starfield armor and Starfield weapons.
The location insight trailers
This is a collection of trailers, all released in and around some of the interview trailers, which offered more of a look into the development and creative processes of Starfield. The location insight trailers all offer a closer look at a few key locations in the game.
First was the Akila City trailer, giving a closer look to the capital of the Freestar Collective.
Coming alongside this was the trailer for Neon, a pleasure city in the Volii System.
Joining them both was the New Atlantis trailer, the capital for the United Colonies and the Constellation faction on Jemison.
Just over a year following, we got a Settled Systems trailer – the final of the location insight trailers. This offered more of an overview, highlighting the general setting, as well as a handful of other features like Starfield factions.
The interview trailers
Like the location insight trailers, the interview trailers are a collection of interview footage from the dev teams at Bethesda. They mainly focus on development over the in-game features, giving a better understanding of the journey and through processes that have shaped the game.
These interview videos were titled “Into the Starfield”, and consist of three notable “episodes”.
Episode One “The Endless Pursuit” tackles a lot of the main game design philosophy that the teams agreed on when beginning their approach to the game.
Episode Two “Made for Wanderers” takes a look at the team’s approach to immersion, and how they’ve aimed to incorporate the right tones and themes throughout various different aspects of the experience.
Episode 3 “The Sound of Adventure” takes an in-depth look at Composer Inon Zur and his work to create the soundtrack and music for Starfield – and why that music is so important to the experience.
Gameplay reveal trailer
In June of 2022 we got our first real look at the gameplay for Starfield. In a fifteen minute trailer presented by Todd Howard at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, we watched the opening minutes of a mission to Kreet, a moon of the planet Anselon in-game. This trailer showed off a variety of features for the first time, from exploration to combat.
Starfield release date announcement trailer
The launch date announcement finally came in this trailer back in early March. Here, we got our official answer to when we’d finally get our hands on the game: September 6, 2023.
Starfield official gameplay trailer
This shorter trailer presented a more condensed version of the type of thing we got in the gameplay reveal, albeit with new footage. We saw a variety of locations, situations, characters and exploration. It also gave some new clues to the wider story of Starfield.
Starfield Direct showcase
By far the longest and most extensive look we’ve gotten for Starfield came, fittingly, from the Starfield Direct showcase. This event, dedicated to the game, gave us an almost one hour long look into the game, presented by Todd Howard and supplemented with commentary from a massive variety of developers at Bethesda. The Starfield Direct trailer offered a gameplay deep dive, a close look at the story, a look at Starfield character creation, and much, much more.
Starfield location story trailers
Another batch of trailers, these ones are a little bit different. These three trailers are gorgeous, hand-animated trailers – each one tied to a specific location. They offer short, quick stories about unnamed characters in these places, giving a great sense of worldbuilding and wonder to the Settled Systems.
They include:
- “The Hand That Feeds”, set on Neon
- “Where Hope Is Built”, set in Akila City
- “Supra Et Ultra”, set in New Atlantis on Jemison.
Starfield live action trailer
What game wouldn’t be complete without a live action trailer? Just recently on August 22, Starfield’s most recent trailer dropped, this one a live action piece building on the tones, themes and atmosphere that Starfield is set to capture. All to a brilliant instrumental rendition of Elton John’s Rocket Man.
That covers everything we’ve seen so far for Starfield trailers. Given how close the Starfield release date is now, it’s unlikely we’ll see much more before launch. Be sure to check out our more extensive breakdowns of mechanics like Starfield outposts, or locations, including all the Starfield planets, if you still need to scratch that itch before launch.
