2023’s Summer tentpole movie, Barbie, features an all star cast of Hollywood stars all coming to play in Barbie‘s world. As with this movie’s release, the iconic children’s toy brand marks a major milestone in its near 65 year history, with this being the first time that the character’s have appeared in live action.

In addition, the movie marks a major milestone for the Barbie (2023) movie’s writer/director, Greta Gerwig, who has successfully made the transition from celebrated indie movie actress and writer to successful and critically acclaimed director, and now with Barbie, big budget Hollywood movie director.

But, who, you may be wondering, are the stars set to breath life into the lives of Barbie, Ken, and their friends on the big screen?

Well, let’s have a look and discuss who is starring in the movie’s cast and what other movies and TV shows that you’ll recognise them from.

Who stars in the cast of the Barbie (2023) movie?

Margot Robbie plays Barbie

Since her breakout Hollywood role in Martin Scorcese’s The Wolf of Wall Street opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

Margot Robbie has plotted her own course through Hollywood, taking on a variety of dramatic roles such as disgraced Olympic skater, Tonya Harding, in I, Tonya (2017), the fierce and formidable, Queen Elizabeth I, in Mary Queen of Scots (2018), and tragic Hollywood actress, Sharon Tate, in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).

in addition to starring as beloved DC Comics character, Harley Quinn, in Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey and the Fabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021).

Now, in Barbie, she not only stars as the title character but serves as one of the movie’s key producers.

Ryan Gosling plays Ken

Never one to allow himself to be pinned down to just one type of role. Ryan Gosling has made a successful acting career in Hollywood by starring in roles that he personally finds interesting, rather than just taking roles because they were lucrative or the kind of role that he was expected to play.

This career trajectory has seen him go from a heart-breaking and lauded performance opposite Michelle Williams in Blue Valentine (2010), to a gripping and nuanced performance as the near silent “Driver” in Drive (2011), to a more light hearted and fun role as the serial womaniser, Jacob, in Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), to an Oscar nominated musical performance as soulful Jazz musician, Sebastian, in La La Land (2016).

Now, in Barbie, he plays Ken, Barbie’s decades long love interest and romantic partner in the toy aisles, and presumably in this movie as well.

Will Ferrell plays an as yet undisclosed character

Although nothing has been revealed at the time of this writing about exactly which character he will be playing the movie. It is known that Will Ferrell, the iconic star of such Hollywood comedy classics as Elf (2003), Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004), and Step Brothers (2008), will be appearing in the movie in as yet undisclosed role.

Emma Mackey plays an as yet undisclosed character

Following her breakout role as Maeve in Netflix’s Sex Education (2019 – 2021). Emma Mackey has being steadily building an impressive movie filmography, with starring roles in Eiffel (2021), Death on the Nile (2022), and Emily (2022).

And now, with an, as yet undisclosed, role in Barbie, she could very well be about to see even greater success in Hollywood.

Connor Swindells plays an as yet undisclosed character

Another Sex Education breakout, Connor Swindells, has been building an impressive filmography of his own with starring roles in Emma (2020) alongside Anya Taylor-Joy, and in SAS Rogue Heroes (2022) for Peaky Blinders creator, Steven Knight.

Ncuti Gatwa plays an as yet undisclosed character

Rounding out the trinity of breakout stars from Netflix’s Sex Education, we have Ncuti Gatwa, who, at the time of writing this, is in Cardiff, South Wales, filming his first ever series of Doctor Who (1966 – 1989 & 2005 – Present) as The Fifteenth Doctor alongside Coronation Street (1960 – Present) breakout, Millie Gibson, who will be playing The Doctor’s latest companion in time and spice, Ruby Sunday.

But, before we get out first glimpse of Gatwa in Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary specials, he can be seen in the first teaser trailer for Barbie alongside Ryan Gosling’s Ken as another citizen (toy?) of Barbieland.

Rhea Perlman plays an as yet undisclosed character

Iconic Cheers (1982 – 1993) actress, Rhea Perlman, who’s voice will also be familiar to Star Wars fans as The Bad Batch (2021 – Present) animated series’ surly but noble bar owner, Cid, is set to star in Barbie in an, as yet still undisclosed starring role.

Nicola Coughlan plays an as yet undisclosed character

Derry Girls (2018 – 2022) and Bridgerton (2020 – Present) star, Nicola Couglan is strongly rumoured to be appearing in the Barbie movie. But, at the time of writing, no details have been confirmed regarding whether or not she will appear in the movie, and if she is, what role that she would be playing.

Kate McKinnon plays an as yet undisclosed character

One of Saturday Night Live‘s (1975 – Present) most recognisable and loved stars, Kate McKinnon is set to appear in Barbie in an, at the time of writing, undisclosed role.

Michael Cera plays an as yet undisclosed character

Arrested Development (2003 – 2006 & 2013 – 2019), Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010), and The Lego Batman Movie (2017) star, Michael Cera, is set to star in an, as yet undisclosed, role in the Barbie movie. Although it feels a safe assumption to say that it will likely be a comedic role that he is playing.

Ritu Arya plays an as yet undisclosed character

The Umbrella Academy (2019 – Present) star, Ritu Arya, is set to appear in Barbie in an, as yet undisclosed, role in the movie.

Simu Liu plays an as yet undisclosed character

Kim’s Convenience (2016 – 2021), and Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings star, Simu Liu, is set to appear in the Barbie movie in an, as yet undisclosed, role. Although, the movie’s first teaser trailer does appear to show Liu’s character in an Elvis Presley, or Danny Zucko of Grease (1978) inspired outfit taking part in what appears to be a musical sequence.

Issa Rae plays an as yet undisclosed character

Issa Rae looks set to have a great 2023 with an, as yet undisclosed, role in the Barbie movie. In addition to appearing in the animated Spider-Verse sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), where she plays a new version of the Marvel Comics hero, Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman.
