Just in case you were wondering after watching this teaser. The answer your seeking is, “Yes”, in a particularly bold, and incredibly tongue-in-cheek creative decision.

This first teaser is indeed a parody of sorts of one of Barbie parent studio, Warner Bros. Pictures’, most famous movies, 2001: A Space Odyssey, directed by the iconic and seminal filmmaker, Stanley Kubrick.

As we see the trailer opens with narration by none other than screen icon Helen Mirren (next to be seen in Shazam: Fury of the Gods) narrating images of young girls playing in a rocky desert with baby doll toys in a manner that is deliberately reminiscent of the apes seen in Kubricks’ iconic sci-fi classic.

Then as the trailer progresses, we see that the Obelisk of 2001 has here been replaced by a giant Barbie doll which is then revealed to be the movie’s star, Margot Robbie, in character. As she playfully winks directly at the camera.

Immediately followed by some brief glimpses of her co-stars, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, and Issa Rae. Alongside a blink and you’ll miss it glimpse of Doctor Who‘s upcoming Fifteenth Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, as he dances in day glo coloured fitness gear alongside Gosling.

Barbie is set for release worldwide, exclusively in theatres on 21st July 2023.
