Sunkern is a budding sunflower seed Pokémon that players can find in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. It’s a relatively weak Pokémon in its base form, however, can be a force to reckon with once it’s evolved into Sunflora. Plus, as implied by its Pokedex description, Sunkerns mostly try to conserve the little energy that they have for their evolution process.

How To Evolve Sunkern Into Sunflora
Evolving Sunkern consists of two basic steps: acquiring a Sun Stone and then applying it on your little seedling to trigger its evolution process. We’ve described both the steps below, starting with how you can get your hands on a Sun Stone:
How To Get Sun Stone And Applying It On Sunkern
There are multiple ways to obtain a Sun Stone in Pokémon Scarlet And Violet. Here are the most common methods to acquire one:
- Picking up random sparkling items, especially from the Asado Desert
- Defeat Sunflora in the Artazon Gym Challenge
- Participate in an auction for the Sun Stone at the Porto Marinada Auctions
- Win the Sunflora Hide and Seek challenge at Cortondo

Some of these methods involve lucking out. It can be unreliable to hope that the odds skew in your favor. So, if you want a sure-fire way of getting a Sun Stone, defeat Sunflora in the Artazon Gym Challenge, and you’ll be rewarded a Sun Stone!

Sunkern and Sunflora Stats For Battle
Rest assured, you’re certainly getting the bang for your buck, or rather, PokeDollars, by evolving Sunkern. Its stats show an incredible improvement once it evolves into Sunflora. Don’t believe us? Check them out yourself:
Base Stats | Sunkern | Sunflora |
HP | 30 | 75 |
Attack | 30 | 75 |
Defense | 30 | 55 |
Sp. Attack | 30 | 105 |
Sp. Defense | 30 | 85 |
Speed | 30 | 30 |
Total | 180 | 425 |
You’ll be surprised to know that Sunkern actually held the worst overall stats for any Pokémon for a grand total of 17 years, only being surpassed by Wishiwashi when it was released in Sun and Moon.

In comparison, Sunflora is much more viable in battle. It has decent stats across the board while also specializing in Special Attack. Pair this with one of its powerful STAB nuke moves like Petal Dance, Solar Beam, or Leaf Storm and Sunflora transforms into a force to reckon with!
Final Thoughts
After looking at the stats, keeping Sunkern in its unevolved form seems like a big waste. You should definitely consider expending your Sun Stone on a Sunkern. Given the proper Nature and a viable move set, its evolution in Sunflora can dish out some serious damage in battle. However, if you’re not too big on EV training or even using a Sunflora for battle, you can simply catch one and call it a day after it registers in your Pokedex.
