From top to bottom, this selection is a fair and accurate assessment of the safety player pool talent in the NFL. The Bills are home to certainly one of the best safety tandems in the NFL, while the Steelers Minkah Fitzpatrick has become truly one of the best in the game, illustrating that for all to see last season.

Here’s our breakdown of five of the Top 20 Madden 24 safeties you will be able to play with in August, and why they deserved to be on this list.

Derwin James – 95 overall

At only age 26, Derwin James is easily the best safety in the NFL, and Madden 24 rewarded him with a fair 95 overall rating. James, who’s a three-time Pro Bowler and made first team All-Pro as a rookie in 2018, has been nothing short of phenomenal over his last two seasons and that really came to life over the 2022 campaign. In 14 games played, James had himself a total of 115 tackles (64 solo), four sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles, showing how complete he really is.

Justin Simmons – 92 overall

The Broncos defensive secondary has a bright star in its ranks, and it’s none other than safety Justin Simmons. The seven-year veteran has continuously labored on his craft and improved his game every season, and that reached a peaking point over 2022. In just 12 games played, Simmons had 69 combined tackles (42 solo), a career high six interceptions, three forced fumbles (another career high), and seven passes defended. As you can imagine, Madden 24 had to include the special Broncos safety in their Top 10 list.

Jessie Bates III – 91 overall

The Cincinnati Bengals defensive secondary has been a dangerous one over these last few seasons, and largely because of how consistent yet effective Jessie Bates was for them. In 16 games played over the 2022 campaign, Bates had one of his best performances to date, finishing with 71 combined tackles (38 solo), eight passes defended, a career high four interceptions, and one forced fumble. Though the 26-year-old, star safety is now on the Atlanta Falcons, Bates is still one of the best in the NFL, and the 91 overall rating he received is an accurate one.

Jordan Poyer – 90 overall

The Buffalo Bills have quite the safety tandem with Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde, and Poyer has really grown into the better of the two over these last two seasons. Following a First-Team All-Pro season in 2021 where he finished with 93 combined tackles (63 solo), five interceptions (matching his career high), and nine passes defended in 16 games played, Poyer came back strong again in 2022, finishing the campaign with 63 combined tackles (44 solo), four interceptions, and eight passes defended, despite only playing in 12 games. The 90 ovr rating is a well-deserved one for Mr. Poyer.

Harrison Smith – 90 overall

Although Harrison Smith is 34-years-old, the 11-year veteran safety has continued to impress nearly every season, and last year that came to fruition once again. In 14 games played, Smith had 85 combined tackles (66 solo), five interceptions (matching his career high for a fourth time), and ten passes defended. Even as he’s aged, Smith has illustrated how elite of a safety he can still be in the NFL, and it was only right of Madden 24 to make him a 90 overall.
