Hexwork’s new soulslike RPG can start to become confusing to navigate once you enter the latter half of the game. You’ll find yourself discovering many different branching paths as you attempt to complete your mission to save Mournstead, and one such path will end at the Tower of Penance. But where is it?

Here, we’re going to explain the Lords of the Fallen Tower of Penance location, and walk you through step-by-step how to get there. You’ll need to get to this location for a bunch of reasons. If you’ve managed to find blacksmith Gerlinde and want to bring her all the Rune Tablets, are hungry to defeat powerful bosses and get your hands on some new boss weapons, or just want to find some more Saintly Quintessences to upgrade the Sanguinarix, then the Tower of Penance is the place to go.

How to get to the Tower of Penance in Lords of the Fallen

To get to the Tower of Penance, follow the steps below in order.

  • Travel to the Bellroom Vestige.
  • Open the locked door with the Pilgrim’s Perch Key.
  • Navigate through the caverns until you meet the Sacred Resonance of Tenacity boss.
  • Defeat him and ascend the scaffolding of Pilgrim’s Ascent outside.
  • Reach the elevator at the top of the area.
  • Ascend to the Manse of Hallowed Brothers.
  • Get through the area.
  • Find the key of Abbot Vernoff to open the final courtyard.
  • Defeat Blessed Carrion Knight Sanisho.

Let’s explain each step in just a bit more detail to alleviate any uncertainty.

The Bellroom Vestige

Also called the Vestige of Blind Agatha, this is the first Vestige you’ll come across when you reach Pilgrim’s Descent. You’ll need to warp to this Vestige to begin your journey.

Cavern navigation

The area inside can be difficult to navigate. Make sure you’ve sufficiently levelled up before entering. Luckily, the Bellroom Vestige is also one of our picks for the best farming spots for Vigor in-game.

Once inside the caverns, take whichever route you like, as they’ll lead to the same area. We’d suggest liberal use of ranged attacks to slowly and methodically clear out enemies. Here’s a quick tip for each of the main caverns.

  • Initial cavern – Be careful of the powerful Pureblade Knight here.
  • Walled Dungeon cavern – As you run across the wood scaffolding, jump. There’s a piece of flooring here that will break and plunge you into the pit below.
  • Prison Cell – Unless you’re confident, don’t open this. The Hallowed Sentinel within is a fearsome adversary.
  • Pit Cavern – This small area can only be navigated by being inside the Umbral Realm.
  • Wooden shack – As you exit the first stretch and reach the outside, there’s a hidden Pilgrim to the right of the doorway who will push you off to your death if you aren’t careful.
  • Tunnel Cavern – This is the final stretch. Run past the Pureblade and his hound if you aren’t confident, and you’ll find a Vestige Seedbed just up ahead.

The Sacred Resonance of Tenacity

Assuming you use or stop at the Vestige Seedbed, you’ll have two paths open to you. Up the stairs to the right will eventually lead to the Path of Devotion. If you want the Tower of Penance though, go left. This will take you into a boss arena.

The Sacred Resonance of Tenacity can be tough, but he’s not unbeatable. He’s weak to fire, so be sure to try out some of the best inferno weapons on him, or bring some fire salts. You can dodge all his moves, from his hammer swings to his holy shockwave. This is the most effective counter. Also note that before activating the fight, if you approach the central cage from behind with your Umbral Lamp drawn, you can burst the little nodule protecting him and his friends. Those friends also won’t follow out to fight if you stay behind the cage.

Once he’s dead, head onto the platform outside.

The ascent to the elevator

There’s a number of secrets and paths to explore here, with many protected by dangerous foes. For now, we’d suggest sticking to the route forward, and coming back later. Head for the first ladder, take it up, and begin climbing the staircases. Watch out for the barrels that enemies will push down on your first run. Keep climbing ladders, and try to use the iframes of the animations to avoid damage. Enemies can knock you off ladders easily, so in some cases, you may need to fight or lure enemies away before ascending.

Once you’ve climbed as high as you can go, you’ll enter a platform with many enemies on it, including a Pureblade Knight. There’s an open doorway into a cavern in front of you, but this may distract from the elevator, which is off to your right and behind you. Take it up, and you’ll arrive at the Pathway Vestige.

The Manse of Hallowed Brothers

We’d recommend resting up before continuing, as the Manse of Hallowed Brothers is a full location in its own right. Take your time navigating through the castle. There are plenty of difficult enemies and setups here, but also plenty of good loot, and a large number of shortcuts.

Your aim here is to progress along the main path by solving a combination of Axiom and Umbral puzzles to move towards the far side of the compound. Once here, you’ll need to find Abbot Vernoff’s key to progress further.

Abbot Vernoff’s Key

This key can be a bit tricky to track down, but it’s not too hard to pick up once you know where you’re going.

From the rear courtyard, head to the side opposite the fountain, and take the stairs up to the small bridge. Head through the doorway to find the Vestige Seedbed spot on the floor, and shift into the Umbral Realm. Right ahead is a ladder. Take it up, navigate the path ahead, fighting off the Umbral Reaper or running past until you reach the wooden walkway on the rooftop. Double back through the crates and barrels blocking your path, and head around the right to get inside the rooftop dome. Carefully drop down and navigate the rafters to the end, then drop down onto the overview platform and open the shortcut.

Facing down into the room, you’ll see a number of Penitent worshipers, as well as a Hallowed Sentinel. You can comfortably snipe him from here if you’re not keen on fighting him. Go down to the ground floor of the chapel you’re now in and get to the altar. The Abbot Vernoff’s key will be resting on it.

Blessed Carrion Knight Sanisho

With the key in hand, return to the door in the fountain courtyard. You can open the one near the fountain or the one on the platform – they lead to the same area. Once through, you’ll find yourself in yet another courtyard, this one shorter but wider. In front of you will be the rising presence of the Tower of Penance. One last obstacle awaits.

Descend onto the bridge and you’ll need to fight Blessed Carrion Knight Sanisho. He’s slow, making ranged attacks an easy option, though he does fill the arena with poison, so be sure to have some balms or cures for it on-hand. Once he’s down, you can finally head into the Tower of Penance.

That covers the Lords of the Fallen Tower of Penance location. It’s a long trek to get there, but the loot and exploration are worthwhile rewards. If you’re still struggling to progress with other parts of the game though, we might be able to help you out. Whether you’re trying to beat Spurned Progeny, want some general tips and tricks or an area progression route, or even just need a refresher on how to kick, we’ve got you covered.
