Want the Rune Tablet locations in Lords of the Fallen? NPC quests are nothing new in Soulslikes, and the same holds true for Hexwork’s latest RPG entry to the genre. But just because a quest might seem straightforward doesn’t mean it’s easy.

If you’re stuck looking for the Rune Tablet locations after you find blacksmith Gerlinde and free her, you’ve come to the right place. There’s more to this enigmatic old lady than just upgrading weapons, it seems. Here, we’ll walk you through where to find each of the Rune Tablets in Lords of the Fallen, and explain what exactly they’re for.

All Lords of the Fallen Rune Tablet locations for Gerlinde’s quest

Here’s the location for each of the Rune Tablets you can collect for Gerlinde, and how to reach them. There are three to collect in total. Each one is in progressively better condition than the last.

Cracked Rune Tablet

The first Tablet you can find is located within Fitzroy’s Gorge, partway along to the bridge battle against the Ruiner. Head along the main path until you get into the cave section, and make your way through most of it. Near the end of the area, you’ll come across some wooden scaffolding with two separate ladders leading down to the floor of the cavern. From the top of the platform, backtrack a couple of steps, and if facing the ladder you’ll see another path to your right, blocked off by caved-in rocks. Use the Umbral Lamp to navigate over the debris via a small Umbral bridge and drop down the short ladder. You’ll meet Drustan just down here. After you’ve spoken with or ignored him, continue down the path until you reach the end – a small cliff overlook of the last section of the cavern where a number of dogs are resting. On the floor should be a collection of small blue crystals with a yellow orb item – The Cracked Rune Tablet.

Chipped Rune Tablet

The Second Tablet you can acquire is found in the manor house in Upper Calrath, after you beat the Spurned Progeny boss but before you enter the Sunless Skein Mines. From the District Vestige, head through the portcullis onto the streets of the Upper Calrath Mining District. You’ll want to follow the main path forward, it’s up to you whether or not you fight or run your way through. Keep going past the courtyard with the tree – though note that there’s a Saintly Quintessence here you can collect to upgrade the Sanguinarix. Make your way past the Ruiner demon, and into the desiccated ruins of a burnt room in a house. There’s a spot for a Seedbed Vestige here if you want to grow one. Go into the house, and you’ll need to fight off a couple of tough enemies. Once their dispatched, head down the stairs to the fireplace – the Chipped Tablet will be lying there.

Rune Tablet

You’ll find the final Rune Tablet fairly late into your journey through Mournstead, and you’ll need to beat the Blessed Carrion Knight Sanisho boss first. Once you’ve done this, ride the elevator that takes you to the top of the Tower of Penance, an area found after the Manse of Hallowed Brothers, one of the paths opened up by the Pilgrim’s Perch key. Inside the tower you’ll make your way through a series of scaffolding and Umbral Realm puzzles. Once you reach the bottom of the first section, you’ll arrive on a metal grating floor, with plenty of enemies about. Off to the right and around the corner of the outer ring you’ll find a chest with the Rune Tablet inside.

Should you give Gerlinde the Rune Tablets?

While there’s not much to do with the first two tablets besides handing them over, you’ll be faced with a decision when you speak to Gerlinde about the final tablet. You’ll have a choice between giving the Tablet to Gerlinde, or giving it to her imprisoned eldritch friend, Sparky. There’s a different outcome for each decision, though we’d personally recommend giving it to Gerlinde. Here’s what happens in either case.

• Giving Gerlinde the tablet, will earn you her thanks. You’ll then get a new Crafter’s Essence rune, which completely removes weight and stat requirements from any weapon its fitted into. Next time you visit her, Sparky will be gone – presumably murdered now that he’s outlived his usefulness.
• If you give the last Rune Tablet to Sparky, he’ll thank you and leave, completing Sparky’s quest in the process. You’ll gain the ability to slot runes and runesmith from any Vestige in return. However, this choice will anger Gerlinde. She’ll still sell you items and upgrade your gear, but all her prices will double.

Given the incredible utility of the Crafter’s Essence rune, we’d recommend choosing the first option. That is, assuming you can live with the weight of Sparky’s death on your conscience. Whichever choice you go with though, this will wrap up the quest, and you’ll walk away with an achievement or trophy for your troubles as well.
