The Helldivers 2 controversy ensuing from the PSN fiasco is coming to an end. Sony has reverted their original plans, the game’s positive reputation on Steam has been restored, and fans can now go back to simply enjoying arguably the best game of the year so far. While these are all positives, a Helldivers 2 community manager has acknowledged the ‘unfortunate’ firing of former community manager, Spitz.

As a quick summary of the whole PSN debacle, the original plan from Sony was to implement an in-game requirement forcing PC players to link to PSN. This caused huge uproar online with fans flooding the Steam page with negative reviews while requesting refunds. Fortunately, Sony listened to fans, confirmed PC players will no longer have to link to PSN, and now the game’s positive reputation has been restored thanks to an influx of over 200,000 positive reviews.

The turnaround by Sony is fantastic as it shows they are willing to listen to fans, and it removes the dark cloud from what has been one of the brightest games of the year so far. While the dark cloud that was hanging over Helldivers 2 is mostly gone, the only lingering shade over the game right now is the apparent firing of community manager, Spitz, who encouraged fans to uproar against Sony.

We previously reported that Helldivers 2 community manager, Spitz, was seemingly fired for ‘representing’ the community in the PSN backlash. As per Spitz on Discord, they were involuntarily let go and no longer work for Arrowhead. As for why they were let go, they said, “Generally it’s not a good idea to tell people to refund and leave negative reviews when you’re a community manager”.

It’s important to acknowledge that this reason has not been confirmed by Arrowhead. However, since the apparent firing, fans have created a petition anyone can sign imploring Arrowhead to ‘re-hire the legendary community manager’. The fans participating in this petition acknowledge Spitz as an inspiration in encouraging them to make their voices heard in rallying against Sony’s planned PSN requirement.

While the reasoning behind the departure of Spitz hasn’t been confirmed by Arrowhead as of writing, his removal has at least been acknowledged by existing community manager, Twinbeard. On the official Helldivers Discord, Twinbeard responded to a fan query saying there are currently “two CM:s ATM”.

“There were three of us, myself, Bask, and Spitz,” Twinbeard posted. “Spitz was let go. I’m here and Bask has been fairly quiet for a while, mainly because she’s been given an unproportionate amount of vile shxt from some people. It takes its toll on anyone. Also, there’s sometimes confusion surrounding moderators and community managers. We have apprx. 25 mods and two CM:s ATM.”

Asked by a fan whether they “miss Spitz as much as we do,” Twinbeard posted the following response:

“I’d rather not comment on details surrounding that. It’s one of those things where whatever I say, it could be picked up from different “sides” and I don’t like dividing and sowing split. I’ll do the boring formal response and say “I think the events leading up to him having to leave were very unfortunate.” (That sentence was so boring I almost threw up in my mouth a little, but I think it’s wise to not elaborate.) For now, that will have to suffice.”
