It’s been a wild month for Helldivers 2 so far. All of the mayhem and uproar online has stemmed from the announcement that Steam users would have to link to PSN, but that has now been reverted thanks to backlash from the community. Unfortunately, it appears there has been some casualties in the battle as a Helldivers 2 community manager has seemingly been fired for ‘representing’ fans in the PSN controversy.

The release date and time for the new Polar Patriots Warbond is imminent. Arrowhead’s announcement of a new Warbond this month was lost in all of the uproar about PC users having to link to PSN. Fortunately, Sony has said PC users will no longer have to link to PSN, and this has resulted in over 200,000 positive reviews flooding Steam to save the game’s reputation.

While it’s fantastic news that Sony has ultimately listened to fans, the sad news is that there appears to be some casualties with a community manager seemingly fired for encouraging fans to post negative reviews and request refunds.

Helldivers 2 community manager seemingly fired

As first reported by Gamesradar, Helldivers 2 community manager, Spitz, has seemingly been fired for encouraging fans to post negative reviews and request refunds. This would have been to get the voices of PC fans heard about not wanting to link to PSN in order to play.

On the official Helldivers 2 Discord channel, Spitz revealed they are no longer an Arrowhead community manager, and they are not working for the studio at all now. Per Gamesradar, Spitz made it clear this “was not” a voluntary departure.

As for why they have seemingly been let go, Spitz posted on Discord, “Generally it’s not a good idea to tell people to refund and leave negative reviews when you’re a community manager”. They also posted the following message thanking fans for their support:

“I appreciate all the support and I appreciate even more that everyone can play the game again without restrictions. I knew I was taking a risk with what I said about refunding and changing reviews. I stand by it. It was my job to represent the community, that’s what I did.”

Since the announcement from Spitz, a petition has been created by fans asking Arrowhead to ‘re-hire the legendary community manager’. This petition says Spitz ‘was the reason many Helldivers felt optimistic about returning to the game,’ and the petition implores Arrowhead to ‘return this icon to their previously held position in recognition of his bold Community Management strategy’.

In addition to this petition, there is a flood of messages honoring Spitz on the game’s Discord. There are messages saying ‘free Spitz for democracy,’ there are messages telling him to ‘rest well,’ and there are many messages thanking him for encouraging fans to take action.

While Spitz has seemingly suggested they were fired for encouraging fans to post negative reviews and request refunds, this hasn’t been confirmed by Arrowhead. Gamesradar reached out to Arrowhead for a comment, but no response has been provided.
