Dead Space Remake takes some some sensible liberties by introducing new content and aspects to the 2008 cult classic. It does so by maintaining the intangible magic of the original; each change enhances the experience rather than changes it. Among the new additions is New Game +, which includes a new Level 6 Advanced Suit, a secret Dead Space Remake ending, and ominously named Phantom Necromorphs.
In this guide, we’ll explain what this new Necromorph variant is all about and what to expect during your second New Game + playthrough.

Dead Space Remake – What Are Phantom Necromorphs?
Phantom Necromorphs in Dead Space Remake are new enhanced versions of the enemies you’ll encounter during the game. Visually, they are different, with Motive changing their appearance to make them more menacing with beady red eyes, more limbs, and a gray-purplish tint to their skin.
The changes aren’t just visual, though. Phantom Necromorphs in Dead Space Remake are tougher, cause more damage, move faster, and are much harder to kill. Limbs take much more firepower to sever than the base variant Necromorphs found during a normal playthrough.
During New Game +, Phantom Necormorphs spawn from the start of Chapter 1 – New Arrivals. They appear as the final Necromorph as part of regular waves of enemies, acting as a kind of mini-boss, but also as part of random encounters throughout the USG Ishimura. They tend to spawn in loot rooms, behind corners, and in addition to the usual enemies in the game rather than replacing them.
As far as we can tell from our time in New Game +, there are three Phantom Necromorph variants:Â
- Phantom Slashers
- Phantom Leapers
- Phantom Lurkers
