In A Plague Tale: Requiem, tools are required to upgrade you weapons and equipment at work benches. You’ll find tool upgrades scattered around the game’s 17 chapters, typically in larger crates and secrets chests.
Below, you’ll find the location over 30 tools in A Plague Tale: Requiem. We reckon there are a couple more we’ve yet to stumble across, so we’ll keep this list updated with any more we find.

Chapter 3 – A Burden of Blood
Tool 1 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
During The gate portion of Chapter 3 – A Burden of Blood. Just before reaching the gate leading outside of the city, head up a short flight of steps on the left. The chest containing the tool upgrade is in a small alcove straight ahead.
Tool 2 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
On the way to the Herbalist’s hut in Chapter 3 – Burden of Blood. As you make your way across the church yard teeming with rats and guards, head for the top left hand corner. There you’ll find a chest with a tool upgrade inside.
Tool 3 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Found in the depot during The Warehouse portion of Chapter 3 – A Burden of Blood. Head to the back of the room and use a knife to open up the Secret Chest, to pick up several items including a Tool Upgrade.
Chapter 4 – Protector’s Duty
Tool 4 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Progress through the Risky Itinerary portion of Chapter 4 – Protector’s Duty until you need to light and push a brazier through a sea of rats. Instead of heading forward, turn left and push the brazier to the ladder in the distance. Climb up to find a secret chest and a tool upgrade.
Tool 5 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
During The Tar Workshop portion of Chapter 4 – Protector’s Duty, you’ll come to a warehouse containing pools of tar. Continue forward until you regroup with Lucas, then climb the ladder he just descended. Head across the gap via the platform with the large keg to find a chest containing a tool upgrade.
Tool 6 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
During ‘The mass grave of the marshes’ section of Chapter 4 – Protector’s Duty. Continue forward until you come to the large blazing fire. You’ll find the tool upgrade in a chest on the bottom floor of the wood building to the left of the fire. It’s infested with rats, so attract a guard by throwing a stone onto the other chest nearby. Once they’re near, extinguish any fires to attract the rates.
Chapter 5 – In Our Wake
Tool 7 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
During the Cross the construction site portion of Chapter 5 – In our Wake. Progress through the area until Lucas makes his way through the rats. Unlock the latch, then light up the hanging bale. There’s a chest below you on the left that includes a tool upgrade.
Tool 8 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Once you crossed the water and removed the ferry’s chain from the water during Chapter 5 – In our Wake, take a left out of the ferry building. Crouch and pass through the gap under the building. Continue forward to find a chest containing a tool upgrade.
Tool 9 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
After crossing the water and destroying the ferry chain during Chapter 5 – In our Wake, head to the back of the ferry building. Squeeze through a small gap in a fence, then climb up into the attic of the building to find a secret chest containing a tool upgrade. If you need a knife to open the chest, there’s one next to a pile of wooden beams back on the coast.
Chapter 6 – Leaving all Behind
Tool 10 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Progress through Chapter 6 – Leaving all Behind until the quarry. Head inside and take a right, crawl through a passage then instruct Hugo to open the door. Head up the stairs to find a chest containing a tool upgrade.
Tool 11 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
After escaping the quarry in Chapter 6 – Leaving all Behind, you’ll have to navigate across an open area teeming with enemies. You’ll find a tool upgrade on the mound in the middle of the area.
Tool 12 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
After making your way through the quarry and in the house in the Call of the Rats part of Chapter 6 – Leaving all behind, look for a gated room just after the entrance. To access it, backtrack a few steps and crawl through the space on the right to find a secret chest containing a tool upgrade.
Tool 13 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
While crossing the dye works in the Hunting Lesson sub-chapter of Chapter 6 – Leaving all behind, head to the wooden shack to the right of the gate used to exit the area. Inside is a locked room. Head around the back of the shack and shoot the lock off the door. You’ll find a chest containing a tool upgrade among other supplies inside.
Chapter 7 – Felons
Tool 14 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Found during Chapter 7 – Felons. Progress forward until you come to the large shipwreck in the cave just before meeting Sophia. Make your way to and then through the ship, then take the path on the right heading up. Look for a small path leading to a rocky outcrop. You’ll find a chest containing a tool upgrade there.
Tool 15 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Found during The Combat According to Arnaud portion of Chapter 7 – Felons. After meeting Sophia, you’ll make your way to the fishing village to retrieve her boat. Press forward through the area picking off enemies as you go, until you see a small circular sandbank out to sea. Walk to it and pull the small boat in from the water. There’s a chest, including a tool upgrade, on the boat.
Tool 16 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
During The fishing village portion of Chapter 7 – Felons. There’s a chest located on a pontoon near the shore in the fishing village. You’ll need to pull a rope to make the pontoon tumble and land on the beach, then avoid or disperse the rats to reach the chest. There’s a hanging fish you can shoot down to the right of the chest to attract the rats, as well as brazier in the fallen down shack just next to the chest. Odoris is also useful.
Chapter 8 – A Sea of Promises
Tool 17 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Found during Chapter 8 – Sea of Promises shortly after Arnaud storms off to fight the Count. You’ll come to a farm yard. Instruct Hugo to climb under the wall and open the wooden gate. Push the crate underneath the ledge and climb up. Head right to find a chest containing the tool upgrade.
Chapter 9 – Tales and Revelations
Tool 18 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Found during Chapter 9 – Tales and Revelations. Head up to the area with the four Windmills. Solve the windmill puzzle (check out our dedicated guide for all the details). Then venture into the cave to the right of the windmills. You’ll find the entrance by following the path with large stone semi circles you can pass under. Continue through the cave into the smugglers den all the way to the end to find a chest with a tool upgrade. Another tool upgrade is available in the second chest in the same location.
Tool 19 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Found during Chapter 9 – Tales and Revelations. Head up to the area with the four Windmills. Solve the windmill puzzle (check out our dedicated guide for all the details). Tool 20 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Found during Chapter 9 – Tales and Revelations. Head to the cliff overlooking the town with the flying kites. There’s a wooden barn there containing a chest with a tool upgrade. To get inside, climb to the roof and shout down the crate. Drop down to the balcony and shoot the door through the window to get inside.
Tool 21 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Found during Chapter 9 – Tales and Revelations. Head to the gatehouse blocking the path down to the harbor. Head up the path on the left of the gatehouse, then inside and up to the top to find a chest with a tool upgrade.
Tool 22 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Found during Chapter 9 – Tales and Revelations. Head to the large stone tower on the left hand side of the chapter’s large open area. If you’re having trouble finding it, head down the stairs at the front of the palace and follow the river to the left. Once at the tower, head round to the left and shoot through the window to unlock the door. Enter and climb up the first floor to find a secret chest containing a tool upgrade.
Tool 23 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
On the path to the sanctuary during Chapter 9 – Tales and Revelations. After chatting to the goat herder, head up the path on the left until you see a small ruin. Head round to the right and set the patch of dry vegetation on fire, then instruct Hugo to crawl through the gap. Head inside to find a chest with a tool upgrade inside.
Tool 24 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
On the path to the sanctuary during Chapter 9 – Tales and Revelations in the area guarded by many soldiers. Head for the central building and climb up the stairs to find a chest with a tool upgrade.
Chapter 10 – Bloodline
Tool 25 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
On the way to the fort during the Slavers portion of Chapter 10 – Bloodline. When you first encounter the slavers, continue forward until you come to the barricaded temple. Opposite the temple entrance is a ruin with a raised platform. Climb up to find a chest with a tool upgrade inside.
Tool 26 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
In the fort courtyard during Chapter 10 – Bloodline. Make your way through the sea of rats and across the fire trench, then take an immediate left. Continue forward hugging the trench and you’ll find a chest with a tool upgrade.
Chapter 11 – The Cradle of Centuries
Tool 27 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Found during the Sealed Passage portion of Chapter 11 – The Cradle of Centuries. Progress until you drop to the underground cave below the map. When you reach and light up the first brazier turn left and follow the small passage to find a chest with a tool upgrade inside.
Tool 28 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Found during the Rat Tank portion of Chapter 11 – The Cradle of Centuries. During the bridge puzzle, you’ll need to push a cart brazier to rejoin Hugo and Sophia. Sophia will send down a tank you can blow up to clear the path to continue forward. Just before reaching the ladder, there’s a chest on your left with a tool upgrade inside. To reach it, throw tar on the brazier to clear the rats.
Chapter 13 – Nothing Left
Tool 29 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Found during the Grief sub-chapter of Chapter 13 – Nothing Left. After Lucas pop’s Amicia’s shoulder back into place, continue forward up a short flight of stairs. There’s a room on the right that’s barred by an iron gate. Backtrack to find an entrance on the right of the gate. Inside is a chest with a tool upgrade inside.
Tool 30 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
During the Fresh Air portion of Chapter 13 – Nothing Left. After exiting the caves, you’ll come across an area crawling with guards. About halfway through, between a cart, rat sack, and torch, you’ll find a chest containing a tool upgrade.
Tool 31 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
During the Ruined Village portion of Chapter 13 – Nothing Left, near the end of the chapter just before finding Arnaud. Inside a ruined church near a cart and several patches of grass is a chest containing a tool upgrade. A heavily armed guard patrols the area.
Chapter 16- King Hugo
Tool 32 – A Plague Tale: Requiem
Immediately at the start of Chapter 16 – King Hugo, walk forward to the workbench in the building ahead of you. Once inside, look right to find a chest containing a tool upgrade.
