You might be wondering what countries Midjourney is available in, and how to access it, what with the swathes of fascinating, funny, and downright weird AI-generated images circulating the web at the minute.
AI, in all its forms, is doubtlessly an interesting tool, surging in popularity over the last few months and proving useful in a range of applications.
But, perhaps surprisingly, AI models are not always not available to everyone, including Midjourney.
Our research suggests that it is not available worldwide, because it uses a Discord server to host its service, which is not available in Oman; Iran; Egypt; Mainland China; North Korea or the UAE.
This seems to be the only reason why Midjourney is not available worldwide.

It’s pretty simple to get access to Midjourney, you just need to create a Discord account.
However, the registration process involves a verification step, and our research suggests that if you’re trying to register from the following countries, you may be unsuccessful:
- Oman
- Iran
- Egypt
- Mainland China
- North Korea
- The UAE
If you do not receive the verification SMS message, or are otherwise unable to complete verification, you will not be able to use Midjourney.
What’s more, there does not seem to be a way around this at the moment. Discord state that VOIP, burner, or landline numbers cannot be used.
Thankfully though, if you already have a Discord account, there is nothing else you need to download or install.
You do not get unlimited access to Midjourney for free, however – there is a paid subscription service in place for users intending more thorough, or long-term use.
Why does Midjourney use Discord?
There’s a couple reasons why Midjourney uses Discord, a social communication platform, where users can message, voice call and video call each other.
Firstly, it allows users to give the AI model its prompt via Discord’s integrated direct messaging system, similar to the chatbot ChatGPT.

Midjourney reveal how they are a small, independent team of a handful of researchers, and their project is self-funded. Therefore, using Discord servers to host the AI model is likely an economical decision.
Further, having the Midjourney platform on Discord means users can then share their AI-generated images with others, on designated servers, if they wish.
