Now that OpenAI’s Sora has been announced, here’s everything we know about accessing it.

The text-to-video model is capable of producing extraordinarily realistic video that is – dare-I-say – as close to real life simulation as I could ever have imagined. It goes above and beyond any other video diffusion models I’ve seen. Although, a Sora release date has not yet been confirmed.

It arrived just after Google announced Gemini 1.5, and both advancements in AI look to further develop the potential of an Artificial General Intelligence. This follows with questions such as how do you access Sora, which we’re going to answer.

How to access Sora, OpenAI’s Video Diffusion model

At the moment, access to Sora is extremely limited. OpenAI stated that it is “also granting access to a number of visual artists, designers, and filmmakers to gain feedback on how to advance the model to be most helpful for creative professionals.”

Unfortunately, unless you fall into that category, there’s little chance you’re going to be able to try out Sora before the general public does. If you are interested in accessing Sora from a developmental perspective, you’re going to need to contact OpenAI directly.

Why is access to Sora so limited?

The main reason that access to Sora is limited is due to safety concerns. With the advent of AI generated content across text, video, images and audio, there has been countless creatives, celebrities, and regular people who have been harmed by it.

AI has seen deepfakes and identity theft become possible, alongside the risks of harmful content being created in conjunction with this. Part of the “red team” approach is to run the AI through all the necessary tests and limitations to ensure that it doesn’t produce harmful content. Guardrails will be put into place to prevent the model from misused to generate harmful and inappropriate content, while there will also be regulations developed that stop the model from outright and blatantly copying existing video.

The announcement of Sora has seen creatives across the world reacting fairly sceptically. As much as I do appreciate how far technology has come, as a journalist and creative there is also a big part of me that fears the impact it will have on creative industries. By limiting access to Sora initially, it’s going to ensure that the further development of the model is catered towards creative use without blatantly ripping from existing material, nor preventing videographers, animators, and CG artists from losing their jobs.

Can you pay to access Sora early?

Likewise with the lack of an early access, there’s also no way to pay to access Sora early.
