Google just announced Gemini 1.5, it’s most powerful AI LLM to date. It looks to go toe-to-toe with GPT-4, and might just exceed its capabilities in some cases. However, while it’s available now to developers and enterprise users, we’re going over the general release date for Gemini 1.5.

Gemini 1.5 release date

So, technically, Gemini 1.5 is now released. Unfortunately, this is limited to developers and Enterprise users as of yet. A release date for the general public hasn’t been alluded to yet, though there’s enough evidence out there at the moment to suggest when exactly it’s going to arrive. When it does, be sure to check up on how to access Google Gemini 1.5.

We saw Google Ultra 1.0 release early in December last year, with its public roll-out just a week ago on February 8th. If there’s a general pattern to read here, it’s that Google and DeepMind would like to put the model under stress testing for at least two months before releasing it commercially.

This isn’t just a pattern we’ve seen with Google’s AI products, but across the AI tech-sphere as a whole, with OpenAI’s GPT features seeing extensive testing periods too.

With that in mind, we’re going to predict that Gemini 1.5 will see a public release date of mid-April, if all things go to Google’s plan.

Why is Gemini 1.5 not available to the general public?

With all the potential safety risks associated with releasing a powerful artificial intelligence, a strong portion of why Google’s aren’t releasing Gemini 1.5 to the public just yet is in the interest of public safety, or so it claims in its Gemini 1.5 announcement.

Google has said “we’re ensuring our models undergo extensive ethics and safety tests” and that “in advance of releasing 1.5 Pro, we’ve taken the same approach to responsible deployment as we did for our Gemini 1.0 models.” This emboldens our prediction that we won’t see Gemini 1.5 Pro release for a good few weeks of testing.

As AI technologies get more capable, lifelike, and popular, the need for more testing and regulation becomes apparent. Gemini 1.5 won’t see a public release until all the guardrails, limitations, and safety regulations are implemented.

You can sign up to the Google AI Studio waitlist now to secure early access to Gemini 1.5. In the meantime, you might consider comparing Google Ultra 1.0 with GPT-4 as we gear up for the release of its potential successor.

When is Gemini 1.5 available to the general public?

We’re going to predict that Gemini 1.5 is going to see a public launch in mid-April, though until then only Enterprise users and developers will be able to access it.
