How to Beat Kofu In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

As is the case with all Pokémon games, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have you battle 8 Gym Leaders across Paldea before you can challenge the region’s Elite Four. Kofu is one of the Gym Leaders you will meet fairly early on in the game. His Gym battle is not straightforward and requires you to perform some tasks first. This guide will explain how to unlock Kofu’s Gym battle and some easy tricks for beating him.

Kofu’s Gym Test (Water Gym)

Once players show up at Kofu’s Gym in Cascarafa, they will go through a cutscene where they are asked to deliver Kofus’s wallet to him at Port Marinada. Make your way to him at Port Marinada’s market after crossing the Asado desert.

Gym Trainer Hugo

Once you are there, you will have to talk to his assistant, Gym Trainer Hugo, who will challenge you to a battle. Hugo uses a level 28 Floatzel and level 28 Clauncher that you can dispatch pretty easily as long as you’re using Grass or Electric types.

The Auction

After this, you can talk to Kofu, who will give you 50,000 Pokédollars to bid on the auction for an item.  Bid small amounts and increase them by 5,000 so the others eventually give up. Make sure to win the auction; the lowest bid we managed was 35,000 Pokédollars, and we got to keep the rest!

Now you just have to go back to Cascarafra and challenge Kofu at his gym!

Kofu’s Team

Kofu’s Gym’s theme is Water, and his team will comprise of 3 Water-type Pokémon that you need to deal with.

1. Veluza

• Level: 29
• Type: Water/Psychic
• Weaknesses: Grass, Electric, Bug, Ghost, Dark

• Level: 29

Tips For Kofu

Below are some things you should keep in mind for your battle with Kofu:

• Grass and Electric-type Pokémon are the best choices for this Gym duel as they can resist Water-types and deal super effective damage.
• Kofu will Terastalize his Crabominable into a Water-type, so be careful of his powerful attacks during this state.

• You can catch some useful Grass-type Pokémon on your way to Port Marinada, such as Capsakid and Bramblin.
• The best Pokémon to use for this battle are Florigato, Luxio and Tadbulb.
• Note that Veluza has a Flying-type attack Pluck which can catch your Grass-types off guard.

Rewards For Beating Kofu

The reward for defeating Kofu is the Cascarrafa Gym Badge which will let you tame Pokémon up to Level 40.

You also receive the TM 022 Chilling Water, which is a pretty useful Water-type move that deals 50 special damage and lowers the opponent’s attack by two stages.

Kofu is the fourth Gym Leader most players will be facing, and he uses Water-type Pokémon. To unlock his battle, you will have to go to Cascarrafa and take a detour down to Port Marinada to deliver his wallet. After this, you must beat his assistant and win the auction to unlock the Gym battle. Use Grass/Electric types, and you will make quick work of Kofu for the Gym Badge.
