Wondering how to upgrade the Umbral Lamp in Lords of the Fallen? Your Umbral Lamp is a crucial tool, and the canonical source of your immortality in Hexwork’s new Souls-like RPG. But you can actually make it even stronger.

Here, we’re going to walk you through how to upgrade the Umbral Lamp in Lords of the Fallen. It’s a surprisingly complex topic, as there are actually a few kinds of upgrades you can make use of, so we’ll explain those each too. If you’re in search of upgrading the rest of your gear and want to know how to upgrade the Sanguinarix or how to upgrade weapons, we’ve covered those burning questions in some separate guides.

How to upgrade the Umbral Lamp

To upgrade your Umbral Lamp, you’ll need to speak to Molhu in Skyrest Bridge. All types of Lamp upgrades are handled through him, though you’ll need different materials depending on what it is you want to do.

There are two sorts of upgrades you can perform with the Umbral Lamp. The first is to upgrade the Umbral Lamp itself. The second is to socket an Umbral Eye into the Lamp. Both expand the ethereal lantern’s capabilities in starkly different ways.

Upgrading the Umbral Lamp

To upgrade the Lamp itself, you need to find and pick up an Antediluvian Chisel. This is an extremely rare item you can find throughout the game, though you likely won’t begin encountering them until you’ve left the early areas. In our playthrough for our Lords of the Fallen review, we didn’t find a Chisel until shortly before we beat Spurned Progeny. Here’s how to get to it.

Where to find your first Antediluvian Chisel

Head from the Alehouse Vestige to the courtyard in Lower Carlath with a large burning tree guarded by a Ruiner. Shift into the Umbral Realm, and you’ll find a bloated corpse chest hanging from the tree. Siphon its soul out with a soulflay attack, and it’ll drop your first chisel.

Upgrading the Umbral Lamp will have the following effects, though not every level will give identical bonuses.

  • Increase maximum number of Soulflay Charges.
  • Unlock secondary Umbral Eye sockets
  • Increase Dread resistance while in the Umbral Realm.

Socketing Umbral Eyes

A slightly different kind of upgrade, socketing an Umbral Eye can have a variety of effects. You’ll collect Umbral Eyes as rare unique items found all around the world as you progress. Each eye has two effects – a main and secondary effect. You can slot an eye into a main socket to enable its main effect, or into a secondary slot to activate its secondary effect. Keep in mind that you’ll need to unlock secondary sockets by upgrading the Umbral Lamp.

The exact effects the eyes give are wide and varied. The Eye of Rosamund applies the Withered status to enemies when you dodge at the right time nearby to them in the main socket. In the secondary socket it’ll boost your withered health regain by 15%. The Eye of Iorelo the Cursed Knight meanwhile increases the stun time when you soulflay an enemy for the main socket, and increases your Dread resistance by 25% in a secondary one. Be sure to explore thoroughly, and you’ll likely come across plenty of Umbral Eyes with effects and upgrades that best suit your playstyle.

Where to find Molhu

It can be a challenge to find Molhu. And give that he’s one of the best vendors in the game, offering everything from items you’ll need to respec your character to a means for you to get boss weapons, it’s important that you find and meet him. Follow our steps below if you want to get to him quickly and efficiently.

  • Spawn in at the Skyrest Bridge Vestige.
  • Go forward and right, up a stairs that’ll take you into a dark room.
  • Shift from the Axiom into the Umbral Realm.
  • Molhu will be sat near the centre of the room.

That covers how to upgrade the Umbral Lamp in Lords of the Fallen. There’s a lot more to learn about the Lamp though, though, from combat to puzzle solving mechanics. If you want to know how to soulflay or even just how to enter and exit the Umbral Realm, we’ve got you covered.
