If your arsenal is the most important factor for you when weighing up your character build, you’re in the right place. Here we’re going to cover the best starting weapon in Lords of the Fallen, as well as rank a few honourable mentions. Keep in mind that this weapon won’t last you through the whole game though. If you want the best weapons, or something more specific like the best strength weapons, we’ve got you covered.

Best starting weapon for Lords of the Fallen

The best starting weapon in Lords of the Fallen is the Mournstead Spear. There are a few other close contenders, which we’ll cover as well. Here are our reasons for giving the Spear the number one spot.

  • Exceptional range.
  • Great crowd control.
  • Well balanced speed.
  • Excellent synergy.
  • Ergonomic.

Let’s break down each of these reasons in a little bit more detail to explore our choice further. Keep in mind too that this is only our opinion, based on gameplay and testing during playthroughs for our Lords of the Fallen review.

Exceptional range

It’s probably an obvious one, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth highlighting. The Mournstead Spear’s length gives it the best range of any of the starting weapons. Combined with a moveset consisting primarily of forward thrusts, it allows for damage at a distance outside of most enemy’s range to counter.

Great crowd control

On the opposite end, this one doesn’t seem obvious at all. The spear’s narrow profile would suggest that its ability to deal with multiple targets is minimal. Yet the Mournstead Spear has a generous hitbox, and can easily damage multiple enemies in a given thrust. This makes it far easier to manage high enemy density encounters in an efficient manner.

Well balanced speed

There are some starting weapons that outpace the Spear in terms of raw damage, but to its credit, the spear makes up for this shortcoming with a reasonable balance of speed. It’s damage is still nothing to sneer at, and combined with a moderate rate of attack, it’s able to dispatch most enemies before your stamina drains.

Excellent Synergy

Spears are a great choice of weapon to match with defensive tools. The same is true for the Mournsted Spear. Able to keep performance up even if enemies close in, its speed, damage and precision are tuned well enough for players to perform effective counter strikes in between blocking or parrying incoming attacks. If you fancy going fully on the offensive and are able to find one, you can even dual wield spears, making for a fairly easy stunlock against all but the toughest of foes you’ll face early on.

Ergonomic

Last but not least, the Mournstead Spear is a newbie-friendly weapon. Its range, speed and damage make it a safe option with minimal risk, and pair well with a shield. All of this means that it’s a perfect companion for new players who aren’t yet certain of their footing.

What other starting weapons are good in Lords of the Fallen?

The Mournstead Spear might be our top pick, but we’d be remiss not to mention some other gems.

The Blackfeather Ranger Axe is another finely balanced weapon. It’s got plentiful damage, a wide arc, and solid speed. While it does lack a bit in range, and belong to a more advanced starting class, it can nonetheless perform well throughout the early stages of the game, and even longer should you invest in upgrading weapons wisely. If you’re not sure how to do that by the way, make sure you’ve found blacksmith Gerlinde. She’s also your port of call if you have Rune Tablets you want to make use of.

Another standout is the Exiled Stalker Dagger. This thing has a tiny range, and doesn’t pack a massive punch, but is unmatched in attack speed. You can quickly overwhelm many enemies without much hassle. Plus it’s just begging for dual wielding, a setup that very few opponents in the early game will have effective counters for. It is very much a single-target weapon though, and performs poorly in crowd control situations.

That covers our choice for the best starting weapon in Lords of the Fallen, and its runners up. There’s plenty more to get to grips with once you start playing. Whether you’re looking for some general tips and tricks, need a refresher on some of the basics like how to kick or how to stagger enemies, or just want to know the best graphics settings, we can help you out.
