Want to know how to heal in Lords of the Fallen? Healing is a crucial game mechanic in all Souls-likes, and the case remains such for Hexwork’s newest RPG. But how exactly does healing work, and for that matter, how do the other consumables you can get your hands on function?
Here, we’re going to explain how to heal in Lords of the Fallen, including some non-consumable methods you might not have thought of. We’re also going to cover other consumables, and how they work. If you’re still brushing up on some of the game’s basics, why not take a look at how to kick or how to switch weapons, too?
Healing explained in Lords of the Fallen
There are a few ways to go about healing in Lords of the Fallen, and some depend on particular circumstances. Here’s a full list explaining all the ways you can heal in Lords of The Fallen.
- Consuming a Sanguinarix cross
- Consuming Briostone
- Attacking while Withered
- Resting at a vestige
- Using incantations
- Entering the Umbral through death
Some of these depend on particular circumstances, or have additional aspects to them. Lets’ go through each method in a bit more detail.
Sanguinarix Crosses
This is your main method for healing, and arguably the best. Like Estus flasks in Souls titles, the Sanguinrix Crosses restore a set amount of your HP when consumed. You can also upgrade Sanguinrix crosses to increase your carry number and the amount of healing they give.
Briostone
A consumable you can buy from many vendors and find throughout the world, Brimstone acts as a useful healing support item. When consumed, it will gradually replenish a small amount of health over time. The speed and quantity of healing it gives is pretty unimpressive, but the item’s abundance makes up for this, and can be a good way to get your health high enough to survive one more hit in an emergency.
Attacking while Withered
Wither is effectively the game’s name for guard regain. When entering the Umbral Realm or taking damage while blocking, the health you lose as a result will become Withered health. If you then attack without taking damage yourself, you can regain these hit points. Fast strikes tend to be the best way to go about this, so check out our suggestions for best starting weapons if you’re struggling.
Resting at a Vestige
Vestiges are your in-game rest points, serving as this Souls-like’s bonfires. Alongside your regular Vestiges, you can also create your own with Vestige seeds at certain points – check our guide on how to create Vestiges for more on this. When you interact with a Vestige, click the “Rest” option. This will restore your health, as well as your permanent consumables like Sanuinrix Crosses.
Using incantations
As with any good dark fantasy RPG, Lords of The Fallen gives you access to a number of different magic systems and incantations. One of these is incantations, holy spells powered by the god of light, Orius. It will take time and thorough exploration, but you may come across some spells of this type that can restore health.
Entering the Umbral Realm through death
Conversely to conventional wisdom, one interesting way you can heal your character is by dying. Specifically by dying while in the normal world. When you die in the regular world, you’ll respawn in the Umbral Plane – though be aware that dying again will be permanent. This second chance will replenish your health to full, with half of it becoming Withered, as is standard for entering this realm of the dead. Keep in mind though that if things get this far, you’ll still need to find a way to exit the Umbral Realm once you’ve dispatched whatever threat you’re dealing with.
Consumables in Lords of the Fallen explained
Outside of healing items, there are a number of other useful consumables that are worth understanding. Here’s a quick overview of the main ones you’ll run into, and how to use them.
- Unripe berries – These increase your maximum stamina and stamina regeneration for a short while.
- Wards – These reduce the damage you take from certain elements. For example, Wither Ward reduces the Wither damage you take from sources that inflict it.
- Salts – Coming in a variety of types and strengths, such as Minor Holy Salts, Bleed Salts, and Fire Salts these temporarily give your equipped weapon elemental or status damage.
- Balms/cures – These cure certain status effects or ailments, and sometimes grant temporary resistances to attacks which inflict them. A must-have for poison swamps.
- Mannastones – These replenish spent Mana when consumed, and come in different sizes.
- Ammunition satchels/pouches – These replenish spent weapon ammunition when consumed.
- Lucky Paw – This item boosts your item discovery rate for a time.
- Vigor Skulls – Coming in various different sizes, these grant a one-time sum of Vigor when consumed.
- Umbral Vertebrae – When consumed, this item will slowly regenerate Soulflay charges over time. If you’re not familiar with how to Soulflay or what it is, we’ve got that covered.
- Desiccated Vestige Moth – On consumption, this item will teleport you back to your last-used Vestige.
