As you venture into the inhospitable wilds north of Kyovashad, and stumble across a crumpled, discarded note with a cryptic message, you’ll kick-start the Secret of the Spring side quest. The note bears a riddle that reads, ‘Beacon of warmth in winter’s embrace, patience rewarded by nature’s own grace.’
It’s one of the earliest riddles you’ll encounter in the game, coming before most of the Diablo 4 Fractured Peaks dungeons. Completing this side quest is a great way to get gold fast in Diablo 4 too – but how do you solve the Secret of the Spring riddle in Diablo 4?
How to start the Secret of the Spring side quest
To find the note needed to start the Secret of the Spring side quest in Diablo 4, head out of Kyovashad through the eastern gatehouse into the Frigid Expanse area. Head north until you have to grapple up a short ledge next to an Altar of Lilith bringing you to the Kylsik Plateau. At this point, the map should reveal a dungeon called the Forsaken Quarry dungeon.
Run to the quarry dungeon, then take a left at the entrance to find a ladder leading up to a wooden platform jutting out from the cliff. Climb up, and you’ll find the crumpled note. With the note in hand, follow the quest marker down the ladder and northeast to find a hot spring, taking out any enemies you meet on the path there.
How to solve the Diablo 4 Secret of the Spring riddle
Once at the hot spring, it’s time to solve the riddle. The key part is the reference to patience. You’ll need to use the Wait emote to solve the Secret of the Spring riddle. The emote doesn’t show up by default on the Emote Wheel, so if you haven’t added it already, you’ll need to before pushing the quest forward. If this ends up being a chore and you’re using a controller, maybe consider configuring it for the best controller settings, to save yourself any future headaches.
Tap E on your keyboard or the up button on the D-pad on controller to bring up the Emote Wheel, then click the Customize button underneath. Left-click on Wait in the list of emotes, then select where you want to assign it on the wheel below. Remember to click Save Changes.
Stand by the spring and bring up the Emote Wheel by pressing E or up on the D-pad again, then left-click on the Wait emote to reveal a Buried Chest. Loot the chest for a stack of rewards, including XP, Gold, gear, and to complete the side quest.
