The PSVR 2 Cinematic Mode isn’t a brand new feature, in fact, the original headset also featured this. The original PSVR released in 2016, and while it’s maybe slightly outdated now, it was still an innovative, and industry defining product.
We’re now only a short while away from the PSVR 2 release date, and we’re just as exciting for its launch as you are. If you want a in depth breakdown of it you can check out our glowing PSVR 2 review to learn more.
The Cinematic Mode is used, for example, when you’re playing PS5 games on PSVR 2. Ordinarily, your TV for the PS5 will display visuals, however if you have the PSVR 2 plugged in, visuals can also also be displayed through the headset.
This means you could access the PlayStation 5 home menu through the headset, and alter settings and go on the PS Store. However, that’s not really an exciting use-case. What does excite us, is the possibility to load up Hogwarts Legacy or Modern Warfare 2 in the VR headset, and explore those worlds.
This is only possible through the PSVR 2’s Cinematic Mode – so what else can you do with this feature?
What can you do with the PSVR 2 Cinematic Mode?
As mentioned in the PlayStation VR 2 FAQ, the PSVR 2 Cinematic Mode allows you to see the PS5’s UI through the headset. This doesn’t end at UI, as you can also see games, media content, and apps through the headset too.
However, the only drawback is that the PSVR 2’s Cinematic Mode only displays 1920×1080 resolution between 24/60/120Hz. Audio is also only passed through the headset, as the display mode assumes that a TV isn’t connected.
You can also use HDR in the PSVR 2’s Cinematic Mode. The PSVR 2 Cinematic Mode is one of the key features negating the need for a TV on the PSVR 2. You could potentially use the feature to watch TV and video content from YouTube, which is an interesting potential use-case for the device, however you’d certainly feel discomfort from prolonged periods of media consumption.
We’re going to be keeping an eye our for the latest updates on the PSVR 2 – including where to buy it and how it compares against the original PSVR. Make sure to check back in with us periodically for updates on the PSVR 2.
