We’re bringing you our comparison of the RTX 4060 vs PS5 so you can see how Nvidias’ latest card shapes up against the console competition.
The RTX 4060’s release date has passed, and its specs ensure that many people are eyeing up the Lovelace GPU. Building a gaming PC can get expensive fast, so the fact that this card is the most affordable in the RTX 40-series so far (a potential RTX 4050 release would change that), is a main selling point.
Console gaming can offer an even more affordable way to play the latest triple-A titles. The PS5 not only has a powerful and capable GPU, but a CPU, PSU and cooling system all perfectly designed to go with it. While many GPUs out there blow the PS5 out of the water in terms of power, the lower price of the RTX 4060 also comes with a lower level of performance, making it perfect to put head-to-head against the PS5.
To make our comparison as thorough as possible we’ve broken it down into different categories and compared the two in each one. Let’s get into it.
RTX 4060 vs PS5 – specs
RTX 4060 | PS5 | |
Architecture | Ada Lovelace | CXD90044GB |
CUDA Cores/Shaders | 3,072 | 2,304 |
GPU Clock(MHz) | 2,460 | 2,233 |
VRAM | 8GB GDDR6 | 16GB GDDR6 |
Memory Bus | 128-bit | 256-bit |
Bandwidth | 272GB/s | 448 GB/s |
TFLOPs | 15 | 10.2 |
TDP | 115W | 180W |
We’ve plugged in a set of key specs from the RTX 4060 and compared them to the specs of the GPU of the PS5. This is because this can be compared on a like-for-like basis to the RTX 4060. Remember that the PS5 also has a CPU, SSD storage, cooling system and more. For example, your TDP becomes a much less important thing to consider as the PSU comes included, whereas, for the RTX 4060, you’ll need to make sure you have one that is up to the task.
If we do look at both the specs side by side, we see that both the RTX 4060 and PS5 have a pretty similar amount of graphic generating power. The RTX 4060 is quite far ahead in the key spec of CUDA core count. It’s these cores that power the complex number crunching of generating graphics.
However, the PS5 has double the VRAM, this is significant. In fact, the 8GB of VRAM featured in the RTX 4060 has been a point of criticism from the PC gaming community. This means that the PS5 has more memory to draw on, which ultimately boosts performance overall.
RTX 4060 vs PS5 – resolution and framerate
So how do the PS5 and RTX 4060 specs impact resolution and framerate? Well, unlike with PC gaming, there are some concrete performance ceilings for the PS5. No matter the game, the PS5 will not produce more than 120FPS when playing in 4K, or 1440p. Considering the price range, along with the fact you are essentially getting a complete gaming set-up, this is not a bad deal. Though it should be noted it often won’t reach this upper limit, especially when in 4K.
The RTX 4060 meanwhile is one of the best GPUs for 1080p. This means you can expect the high frame rates needed for competitive online play. The RTX 4060’s 4K performance is less satisfactory, with the limited VRAM starting to have an effect. It is hard to fully compare performance because the PS5 has an integrated custom Zen 2 CPU, while for the RTX 4060, the performance will be affected by whatever CPU you pair it with.
RTX 4060 vs PS5 – price
The RTX 4060’s launched with a price of $299, with specific AIB cards perhaps going for slightly more. This does make it the most affordable card Nvidia has released for a while, and easily one of the best GPUs for under $500, but it is also one of the only RTX 40-series card with that limited VRAM count. You can find out where to buy the RTX 4060 here.
The PS5 meanwhile is $499. Just under double the price for similar performance but don’t forget that all you need to get gaming is an HDMI cable and one of the best TVs for PS5. In order to get the RTX 4060 fully operational you’ll need all the other necessary components for a gaming PC.

Final word
Provided your RTX 4060 is backed up by a decent gaming rig, it should be able to offer you superior overall performance to the PS5, but only marginally. What’s more, in reality anyone considering either of these devices has a lot more to consider than pure performance. For example, there are loads of PS5 exclusive games, there’s the rolling cost of PlayStation Plus for online play, and the technological know-how required to build a gaming desktop.
Essentially, both the RTX 4060 and the PlayStation 5 offer a good return on investment and perform well within their respective categories. If you are starting from scratch with a concern for price, the PS5 is a simple and effective way to get top gaming performance. If you are interested in top performance, and the ability to upgrade components the RTX 4060 is a great starting GPU for a new PC gaming enthusiast.
