As we take a closer look at the RTX 4060 specs, we’re wondering if the RTX 4060 is good for 4K.

The RTX 4060 has launched and plenty of people are wondering where to buy it. As the most affordable graphics card of the Nvidia 40-series to date, fans are hoping the RTX 4060 will be able to pull through and deliver 4K in some of their favourite titles. Based on what we’ve learned so far about the 4060 specs, the new graphics card definitely isn’t geared towards 4K.

Will the RTX 4060 be good for 4K gaming?

The RTX 4060 is not very good for 4K gaming. To get the best idea of why, we’re taking a closer look at the specs. If this comes as a disappointment, why not check out the best graphics cards for 4K gaming instead?

VRAM

VRAM is a hugely important factor when it comes to a GPU’s 4K performance. The RTX 4060 comes with 8GB of GDDR6 which will come as a disappointment in general, regardless of whether you’re hoping to play in 4K resolution. While 8GB of VRAM is probably enough for gaming, it’s still pretty stingey and has left the gaming community fustrated. If you’re looking for a 40-series graphics card without breaking the bank, you might be better off waiting for the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB model which releases in July.

CUDA core count

CUDA core count is responsible for calculating and rendering the graphics. As a general rule, the more CUDA cores, the better. The 4060 has a total of 3,072 which likely isn’t enough for 4K gaming. Compare this number to the 4090’s impressive 16,384 which can handle 4K easily and you’ll understand why.

DLSS 3

The 40-series feature might make a few small inroads for 4K gaming with the 4060 – DLSS 3. For those unaware, DLSS 3 is a clever AI deep-learning tool which optimises the GPU’s performance without drawing on more computer power. With DLSS 3 compatible games like Diablo 4, your 4060 might be up for the challenge, though you’ll probably be sacrificing higher frame rates.

Can the RTX 4060 do 4K gaming with ray tracing?

As the lower end graphics card of the 40-series starts, the 4060 has not been marketed as a 4K graphics card, instead standing more in the lower-to-mid-range. With ray tracing enabled, we’d expect the RTX 4060 to seriously struggle, and you may even see your system start to bottleneck. If ray tracing at high resolution is important to you, we recommend checking out the best graphics cards for ray tracing.
