I often liken Helldivers 2 to Elden Ring with guns, especially on harder difficulties. It requires a lot of strategy and lots of frantic movement to try and escape and defeat the hordes and Automatons and Terminids. On some missions, you can spend the entire 40 minutes without a breather and it can push gamers to their limits.

U/GiggityGansta took to Reddit to suggest an idea to improve the maps by adding trenches that players can fight from, as well as take cover from incoming attacks. “Trenches, crisscrossing trenches of Automaton and old overrun SEAF defensive lines. No Mans land between the trenches as well, with corpses of Automaton Tanks and Factory Striders littered about. Basically, put Battlefield 1 into Helldivers 2,” they said.
It is unclear how this would be pulled off, whether it would just be an update to existing maps, or some players in the replies have suggested a Stratagem that creates a trench in real-time, such as u/TerraArachnid who said “It’s be cool if we got a stratagem that dug trenches too. Could be like a mini eagle air strike that digs a rough trench to use quickly.”
Having more ways to take cover, especially in Automaton missions, would be useful and a much-needed quality-of-life change to the game. Especially on harder difficulties, it is incredibly difficult to get out of the way of gunfire from the robots, with the occasional rock or tree being the difference between life and death. Trenches do already exist in the game, with them usually surrounding Fabricator locations, but a deeper trench that players can stand in would be a great addition to Helldivers 2.
With the focus being on the Automatons at the minute, this could be a great addition for Arrowhead Game Studios to add in a future update. The current Major Order calls for players to “split the Automaton forces in two” by cutting off two supply lines to the Andromeda Sector. If you’re a Terminid player but want to do your bit for democracy, changing your loadout will be crucial.
