In a year filled with several high-profile releases, there can only be so many winners, and alas, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was one of the current calendar’s biggest casualties after failing to take home any awards during the annual The Game Awards celebration in 2023. Despite being nominated in multiple categories, including Game of the Year, Best Performance, and Best Action-Adventure Game, the web-slinging sequel ended up being passed over in each one, much to the chagrin of its fans.

Of course, Spider-Man 2’s winless night at The Game Awards was not due to a lack of quality or content since it remains one of the year’s best games (as evidenced by our glowing review). But surprisingly enough, the same fans who have lauded the game since its launch are now turning on Insomniac Games’ follow-up after failing to garner any accolades at the annual awards show.

Several community members have started turning to social media sites like Reddit to voice their frustrations at the game’s failure, calling it out for being a “step back” from the first game and being “too safe” of a sequel. On the other hand, some complained once again about the Spider-Man 2 game length, with one Redditor noting that they were already at “60 hours in BG3,” having only played with one race and class.

But with Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 immediately establishing themselves as groundbreaking trendsetters in their respective genres from the get-go, there was only so much other games could do to set themselves apart from the rest of the pack. And Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, though innovatively excellent in its own right, unfortunately, was one of this year’s projects that became a victim of its counterparts’ sheer brilliance.

In any other year, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, much like many other nominees, would undoubtedly win their fair share of accolades. But for fans wanting to see their favorite webhead get the awards it deserves, you’ll just have to wait until the next Spidey installment’s release. Until that time, check out our guides on Spider-Man 2 spider bots, Spider-Man 2 how to fast travel, and the Spider-Man 2 The Flame mission walkthrough so you can platinum your way through the game.
