As part of the unfortunate leaks that have recently affected Insomniac Games, the ransomware group responsible for the massive security breach has revealed the alleged budget for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Though AAA games typically demand exorbitant amounts of money before each one can be made (Horizon Forbidden West and Red Dead Redemption 2 are two examples that immediately come to mind), the funds used to create the web-slinging sequel trumps that of the latter projects.
With Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 receiving additional updates in the new year, more players continue to get the most bang for their buck as further expansions are set to resume Peter Parker and Miles Morales’s latest crime-fighting escapade. However, based on the game’s reported budget, it may take more than a few years before the vaunted studio can recoup its losses from creating the widely celebrated sequel.
This is because, according to a post on Reddit, Insomniac Games spent approximately $315 million in making Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – a sum that trumps the similarly obscene budget of Guerrilla Games’ equally beloved creation, Horizon Forbidden West, which required around $212 million to make. It’s worth noting, though, that the alleged inflated budget needed to create the former may have reached this amount due to the licensing costs associated with Marvel and Disney IPs.
Fan reactions toward the figurative mountain of cash needed to make Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 have predictably expressed surprise at the amount, as one Redditor said: “It is mind-boggling to see a game’s entire budget reach that level.” Of course, with Sony and Insomniac Games yet to confirm this figure, we’d still recommend taking this information with a grain of salt for the time being until official details come to light.
