The remaster of GoldenEye 007 is, apparently, in a kind of limbo, because of the way in Ukraine. The project is barely a secret, and achievements keep popping up for it on Xbox.

Now, Venturebeat’s Jeff Grubb has said, on Twitter, “Goldeneye is still in limbo because of the war.” Eurogamer has also claimed that this is accurate.

The GoldenEye remaster has been around for a few years. Microsoft wanted a similar result to the Xbox Live Arcade remasters of Perfect Dark, and progress went ahead. Only, due to various issues—to do with royalties, sound mixing, likenesses—the game never saw the light of day.

Then, in January this year, achievement data for the game kept appearing. It seemed as if the developers were playing the game and unlocking publicly viewable achievements. Only last month, it happened again. Achievement data for the game was viewable on the official Xbox website. We have footage of the game being played, and we know that it looks really good.

Hopefully, Microsoft will find a way to make it happen. Owning Rare, the developer that made the original game, for the Nintendo 64, Microsoft is in a great position. It would be a killer exclusive, and of course it would end up on Xbox Game Pass. And it would inevitably feature online multiplayer.

There was, of course, a GoldenEye remake on the Wii. It was quite good.
