Rare has announced that its Captaincy Update for Sea of Thieves – AKA Season Seven – will now release in August.

The update was originally planned to arrive later this week. However, Rare’s Joe Neate explained this would no longer be the case in a message to the community. “As we started getting closer to the originally stated release date,” he wrote. “It became apparent that things were coming in hotter than we liked and there was a real risk of not delivering to the quality and polish we expect, as well as putting undue pressure across the team to get it all over the line. Subsequently, we have made the decision to shift the release date back slightly to August 4th.”

The upcoming update is set to be a big one, including a lot of features fans have been wanting since launch. These include the ability to rename your ship, decorate your ship’s Captain’s Cabin, earn new rewards and much more. The update was originally revealed during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase event with a musical trailer. You can check that out for yourself down below.

Neate also mentions that August will be a busy one for Sea of Thieves fans. That’s because the month will also see the next story-based Adventure for the pirate game. ‘A Hunter’s Cry’ is set to drop on August 18, and will continue the game’s ongoing tale of the fate of Merrick. Sea of Thieves is available now on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. Season Seven will drop on August 4.
