Remakes and remasters aren’t just a modern-day phenom. Back in 2008 Rare was working on a remake of its classic N64 shooter GoldenEye 007 for Xbox Live Arcade.

Sadly the project got cancelled because Microsoft and Nintendo couldn’t negotiate a deal to see the seminal shooter appear on Microsoft hardware – even though development was said to be quite advanced.

Now, years after the game’s cancellation, Rare Thief has published 30 minutes of gameplay from GoldenEye 007 Xbox Live Arcade, giving us all a reason to be sad this morning.

The video features Dam, Facility, Surface, Cradle and Aztec missions, and also confirms a much rumoured featured that it would have been possible to switch in real time between classic visuals and the updated look.

Even with the visual overhaul GoldenEye was running at a buttery smooth 60fps.

GoldenEye really came into its own in multiplayer and Rare was going all out to make this better than ever, even adding three new stages: Dam, Frigate and Depot. The height differences between characters could also be equalised if players so wished.

What could have been. Sobs.
