‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Latest News

07/11/2022:

DC Comics and Warner Bros. Pictures have just released a brand new poster for the movie:

Credit: Warner Bros. Pictures

The poster doesn’t appear to give much away about the story or events in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ as it’s designed to be a fun and playful teaser intended to remind audiences of the movie’s release on 17th March 2023.

01/11/2022:

With the below tweet, director, David F. Sandberg, has confirmed that the movie is now officially finished, having mentioned back in August that he was doing the final mix of the movie (the final stage of post production where the movies final audio tracks – dialogue, sound fx, musical score, are all mixed and added into the finished movie):

Clicking into the image that Sandberg shared, we see an epic shot of Shazam in mid air holding a staff while a bolt of lightning strikes behind him:

But, you’re probably wondering why is the movie finished now when it’s still over 4 months away from release?

Well the answer to that lies in the movies original scheduled release date of 21st December 2022. As if the movie had still have been releasing on this date as originally planned, then finishing the final mix of the movie now would have meant that Sandberg and his team would’ve either have been right on schedule, or just slightly ahead of it.

As, with the movie now being completely finished, it would have allowed parent studio, Warner Bros. Pictures to begin preparing the theatrical prints of the movie for both regular theatre screens and IMAX screens, before then distributing the movie to theatres worldwide in preparation for its global release.

But, as the movie moved release dates to both avoid clashing with the upcoming ‘Avatar: The Way of the Water‘ which is set to make use of the majority of IMAX screens globally, and, given the success of its predecessor is likely to dominate the global box office in December, January, and quite possibly even February.

It means that David F. Sandberg and his cast and crew can now have a well deserved break before the movie’s promotional tour begins, most likely in February of 2023, and it also allows Warner’s additional time to ensure that everything is ready for their global promotion of the movie ahead of its release.

26/08/2022

As reported by Deadline, Warner Bros. have reportedly delayed the release of ‘Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom‘ from March 17th 2023 to December 25th 2023 in order to give Director, James Wan (Saw, Insidious, Aquaman) and his crew extra time to finish Post Production (Visual Effects, Sound Effects, Editing, Colour Grading Music Scoring, etc) on the movie.

They then report that as a result of this delayed release, ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ has been moved from its previously planned release date of 16th December 2022 to March 17th 2023.

This move of release date is believed to be to fill the opening left by the delay of ‘Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom’, but to also give ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ a release date without too much blockbuster competition. As, had it kept its previous date, it would have been releasing against ‘Avatar: The Way of the Water‘. Which, considering the first ‘Avatar‘ movie is still, 13 years after its initial release, the number one movie for Top Lifetime Grosses (per Box Office Mojo). Any movie releasing against its sequel faces a rocky uphill battle to make back its production and marketing costs and then bring in a profit at the box office.

‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Release Date

The movie is currently scheduled to release in cinemas globally on 17th March 2023.

Where To Watch ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’

‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Story

While little has been revealed yet about the movie’s story, the teaser trailer does give us some key hints as to what dangers Billy and his siblings will have to overcome in this movie. Namely the threat of Helen Mirren (Gosford Park, The Queen, Trumbo) and Lucy Liu‘s (Ally McBeal, Kill Bill, Elementary) Hespera and Kalypso, who seem intent on taking back the Shazam family’s powers.

In addition, judging by the brief glimpses shown in the movie’s first trailer, it seems that Hespera and Kalypso will also be in conflict with their sister, Anthea, played by Rachel Zegler (West Side Story).

As Hespera, Kalypso, and Anthea are all daughters of the Greek God/Titan, Atlas, who also happens to be the source of Billy’s power of Stamina, hence the first “a” in Shazam. As it is not only the name of the wizard who makes Billy his champion but is also an acronym of all the gods that Billy’s power comes from:

Solomon – Wisdom
Hercules – Strength
Atlas – Stamina
Zeus – Power
Achilles – Courage
Mercury – Speed

So could we see Atlas make an appearance in the movie? And, should he appear, could we potentially see other gods from the Greek pantheon appear as well?

Especially considering that we have already seen David Thewlis’ (Dragonheart, Timeline, Legend) Ares appear in both 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman‘ and 2021’s ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League‘ where he appeared alongside fellow legendary Greek Gods, Zeus (played by Sergi Constance) and Artemis (played by Aurore Lauzeral).

Of course, as soon as more information is available about the movie’s story, the article will be updated to include it.
