The encounter bar is essentially a part of your UI which only appears when it is needed. It is there to show you relevant information when in a scenario that Blizzard has deemed it necessary to show the player extra information that cannot be seen on a debuff.

Why is the Encounter Bar good?
The encounter bar is not only good but it’s necessary, without it it would be incredibly difficult to show the information needed for certain encounters and events within the game.
Most of the time the encounter bar is shown as a bar that fills up. In most cases this is to shown information during a boss fight which may be the energy the boss has or something similar that you want to prevent getting to max power.

When has the Encounter Bar been used
The encounter has been used many times throughout the history of the game. Mainly for quests and boss encounters.
Most notably would be on the N’zoth encounter in Battle for Azeroth where it was used to track the players’ insanity and on the Xavius it was used to track the players’ corruption. Both mechanics coincidentally mind controlled the player… Very important to keep track of!

What is the Encounter Bar used for in Dragonflight
In Dragonflight besides the usual uses of the encounter with questing and encounters as we’ve seen so far with World of Warcrafts design, there is one very important use specific to something coming within Dragonflight. Dragon Riding!

The encounter bar appears whenever you are dragon riding! With dragon riding being one of the biggest features of the upcoming expansion the encounter bar is now more important than ever. What you’ll see when you first start dragon riding is a bar that indicates how many charges you have to use your dragon riding abilities. This starts with just 3 orbs that you use but as you get your dragon riding talent points you’ll see it adjust to accommodate up to 6!

Where to position the Encounter Bar
So with such an important part of the UI the obvious question is where exactly to position it? The simple answer is wherever you like, this is your UI afterall and it should go where you want it and feel it fits with your own UI.
Our recommendation is certainly going to be somewhere noticeable, ideally near the center of your screen.

This bar is going to have important information during encounters and will be the main part of your UI while you dragon ride. For that reason you’ll want to be able to glance at it quickly and easily while you play.
