Wondering how to grapple in UFC 5? Then you’ve come to the right place. After what seems like an eternity of waiting, EA Sports have finally released their UFC 4 successor, with UFC 5 available worldwide right now.

Grappling is one of the key elements to a UFC fight. When successful, a grapple can lead to a dominant starting position for ground and pound or submission.

Some fighters are better than others when it comes to this discipline. Make sure to check out the UFC 5 ratings before heading into the octagon.

Without further ado, here is everything that you need to know about how to grapple in UFC 5.

How to grapple in UFC 5

Grappling takes place when you are on the mat inside the octagon, and can be quite difficult to master for those new to the game.

Thankfully, Grapple Assist is on hand to make your life a little bit easier as you try to transition to your desired position.

Takedowns

But before we talk about Grapple Assist, it’s important that you know how to execute a takedown in order to get to the mat in the first place. Here is how:

Single leg takedown

  • PlayStation: Hold L2 & hold square
  • Xbox: Hold LT & hold X

Double leg takedown

  • PlayStation: Hold L2 and hold triangle
  • Xbox: Hold LT and hold Y

Counter an attempted takedown:

  • PlayStation: Hold L2 & R2
  • Xbox: Hold LT & RT

Grapple Assist

To use Grapple Assist in UFC 5, simply follow these steps:

  • Get Up: Whilst grappling, hold your left analogue stick up for your closest get up.
  • Ground and pound: Whilst grappling, hold your left analogue stick to the right for your closest ground and pound.
  • Submission: Whilst grappling, hold your left analogue stick left for your closest submission.

There are three variations of Grapple Assist available in-game, either Assist or Hybrid. The full rundown for each is as follows:

  • Assist: This is the simplified option for grappling controls. It uses the left analogue stick for offensive grappling moves, with directions being automatically determined by the AI. This option is recommended for those who prefer a more casual and accessible approach to grappling without having to worry about specific inputs.
  • Legacy: This option enables a higher level of control and depth in grappling by using the right analogue stick. This option is recommended for those familiar with the game and would like more of a challenge in the grapple.
  • Hybrid: This option combines elements of the Legacy and Assist control settings. This is more advanced, and uses the right analogue stick for grappling moves whilst retaining the simplified button inputs on the left analogue stick for others. This option is recommended for those who are more skilled when it comes to grappling but still need a little bit of assistance.

EA Sports recommend that you use either Legacy or Hybrid for online gameplay, as the Assist option is more predictable and therefore easier to counter.

You can alternate between these options by heading to the gameplay settings found in the UFC 5 menu.

That is everything that you need to know about how to grapple in UFC 5.
