If you’re wondering how to get the glider in Tears of the Kingdom, you’re in the right place. Ever since it featured in the trailers for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo Switch fans have been excited to get their hands on one so they can soar through the skies of Hyrule.

If you’re exploring the Tears of the Kingdom Sky Islands, and no other Tears of the Kingdom vehicles will do, we’ve got the lowdown on how you can get your very own Tears of the Kingdom glider. It’s one of a number of vehicles you can use to fly in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – and it’s probably one of the game’s most useful items. While you’re not able to ascend with the Glider, it’s a great way to avoid fall damage in Tears of the Kingdom and safely land on spots below.

How do you get a glider in Tears of the Kingdom?

To get the paraglider in Tears of the Kingdom, which is not to be confused with the Zonai Wing, you’re going to have to get to the fifth Shrine in the game, which is the first one you encounter when you’re down from the Sky Islands. Follow these steps to get the paraglider in Tears of the Kingdom:

  • Firstly, you’re going to need to complete the Great Sky Island tutorial.
  • Then head over to Lookout Landing where the main quest sends you and you’ll find Captain Hoz at Hyrule Castle.
  • Return to Lookout Landing by fast travelling to Kyononis Shrine (which is on the main path so hard to miss)
  • Then talk to Purah and she’ll explain how Skyview Towers work to reveal the map and she gives you the paraglider then (which we have captured below).

How to use the paraglider in Tears of the Kingdom

Just like in Breath of the Wild, using the glider is easy. Just press X when in the sky to equip it – and you’ll be able to glide through the skies of Hyrule. The best time to use it is when jumping off tiny gaps, for example if you want to escape an enemy attack.

Be warned, though, using the glider depletes stamina so you’re not able to glide forever. Always make sure you plan your descent carefully or else you risk taking massive fall damage. You’re also able to dive, which we explain how to do in our how to dive in Tears of the Kingdom guide. You can also look for updrafts, which are pockets of air that will boost the glider’s altitude temporarily and can be useful to reach higher areas.

Eventually, you’re also able to customize your paraglider via numerous dyes and designs. All you need to do is head over to Hateno Village and you’ll find the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab.

The paraglider might not be as versatile as an out and out flying machine, but being able to drop a glider out of your pocket at a moment’s notice sure is handy. If you want to know more about building vehicles, our Tears of the Kingdom Ultrahand ability guide has you covered. And if gliding isn’t good enough for you, you should check out our Tears of the Kingdom how to fly guide to find out how. You can also jazz up and customise the Tears of the Kingdom paraglider fabric to your liking.
