Whether you select Sam Coe, Andreja, Barrett, Vasco, the Adoring Fan, or Sarah Morgan to accompany your on your interstellar journey, you’ll have the option to deck out your Constellation buddies with the gear of your choice, including weapons, armor, and ammo. Handily, they can also carry junk, gear, and resources to help manage your carry weight, acting as a mobile storage solution.
As anyone who has played even a few hours of Bethesda latest RPG, keeping a stock of ammo is crucial as you explore planets, facilities, refineries, spacestations, and what not, but do you need to do the same for companions.
We’ll explain everything you need to know about the companion-ammo system in Starfield and how it works. For more info on who you can tag along with you, check out our Starfield companions guide. Do companions need ammo in Starfield?
Yes, companions need ammo in Starfield, but they only require a single round to use a weapon in combat indefinitely. What this means is you don’t have to endlessly funnel precious ammo boxes their way through the ‘let’s trade gear’ dialogue option. With a single round, they’ll run and gun their way across the Settled Systems, mowing down pirates and spacers quite happily whether you’re in Neon, New Atlantis, Akila City, or onboard enemy starships.
The only possible hiccup here is that the one round of ammo needs to match the type of ammunition used by the gun they have equipped. For example, if you put one around off 11 mm ammunition into your companion’s inventory menu and they have a powerful weapon that uses 7.77 ammo, they either switch to a different weapon that does use that type of ammo, or failing that, fight with their fists.
That covers whether or not companions need ammo in Starfield.
