Hogwarts Legacy is packed with beasts and mythical creatures, in equal parts adorable and down-right terrifying. However you feel about them, they play a central role in providing vital materials needed to upgrade gear at the Loom.

To get the most out of the beasts peppered beyond the Hogwarts grounds, you’ll first need to complete certain main story beats and then unlock the ability to rescue them. In this guide, we’ll explain how to get and tame beasts in Hogwarts Legacy.

How to Get Beasts in Hogwarts Legacy

The first step to unlocking beasts in Hogwarts Legacy is to push through the main story quest until the Beast Class quest.

During the class, you’ll discover all about caring for beasts and meet Poppy Sweeting, a good-natured student with a love for the animals in and around Hogwarts. You’ll learn how to brush and feed beasts – essential steps in caring for them. After completing the quest, you’ll get access to the Beast Petting Brush and the Beast Feed utility spells.

With that quest wrapped up, you’ll unlock The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom side quest. Deek, the Room of Requirements elf, takes you into the hills around Hogwarts to teach you how to capture and transport beasts using the Nab-Sack utility spell.

How to Tame Beasts In Hogwarts Legacy

To capture a beast, target it, then cast the Nab-Sack spell, emitting a sort of suction beam that pulls the animal to the bag. You’ll see an on-screen prompt (Square on PS5, for example) that you’ll need to follow, sometimes several times (represented by notches – the number corresponding to how many prompts) depending on the size and rarity of the creature, to capture the beast.

As Deek explains, it’s also worth casting a spell like Accio or Levioso before using the sack to temporarily immobilize a beast to make catching them easier. This is especially useful for flying beasts like Jobberknolls, or if a beast strays too far away during the Nab-Sack spell and escapes. Beasts tend to scatter when you approach their dens, so lean heavily on Revelio to track them down.

Unlocking the Vivarium

After Deek’s crash course in rescuing beasts, you’ll return to the Room of Requirements and unlock the vivarium, a conjured safe pen for animals. You can free beasts in the vivarium, where they’ll stay until you remove them using the Nab-Sack. You can also sell beasts at the Brood and Peck in Hogsmeade for 120 Galleons a pop – a great way to make money in Hogwarts Legacy.

Feeding and brushing beasts regularly causes them to produce highly-valuable materials (Jobberknoll Feathers, Toad Warts, Niffler Fur, and so on), which you can then use to upgrade your gear at the Loom in the Room of Requirements.

More vivariums are available as you progress through Hogwarts Legacy, allowing you to house even more beasts. In addition, after completing Deek’s The Plight of the House Elf, you’ll get access to the Breeding Pen conjuration spellcraft. This allows you to breed your own beasts.
