The Hogwarts Legacy thestral ranks as one of the more challenging beasts to catch in Hogwarts Legacy. Not only are they easily startled, but they can also fly, which makes guiding them into your Nab-Sack tricky.

However, with the right combination of immobilizing spells and a bit of determination, you’ll soon have a thestral or two for your vivariums or to progress Deek the elf’s Foal of the Dead side quest. In this guide, we’ll outline the easiest way to catch a thestral in Hogwarts Legacy.

Where to catch a Thestral in Hogwarts Legacy

Firstly, you’ll need to track down a herd of thestral. Easier said than done, given the size of Hogwarts Legacy’s map and the many creature dens. We’ve pinpointed a thestral den on the map in the image above to speed things up. It’s located in the wilds north of Hogsmeade and the Hogwarts castle. The closest fast travel point is the East North Ford Bog Floo Flame. There’s as second thestral den near the eastern shores of Marunweem Lake

How to catch a Thestral in Hogwarts Legacy

Thestrals are mobile beasts capable of flight, so the key to catching one is keeping it grounded and immobile long enough to cycle through the five button prompts needed to pull it into your Nab-Sack (obtained from the Room of Requirement).

We recommend equipping a spell set with Accio, Arresto Momentum, Levioso, and the Nab-Sack. Cast the Disillusionment spell to stay undetected for as long as possible and slowly approach the thestral den. Target a Thestral, then cast Accio, Levioso, and Arresto Momentum in quick succession. Doing so will immobilize the beast. 

Immediately deploy the Nab-Sack, and while going through the button prompts, walk towards the thestral. Staying close to the thestral gives you a fighting chance to keep the animal within range should the spells run out before you’ve caught the beast.

If everything goes well, you should have caught a thestral. Rinse and repeat as needed. You’ll need a male and female thestral to breed an offspring in the breeding pen in the Room of Requirement Vivariums for the Foal of the Dead side quest.
