Video game adaptations are almost as old as the medium itself, and over the years there have been plenty with varying degrees of quality. From the incredibly lackluster Super Mario Bros movie and Mortal Kombat Conquest in the 90s, to the billion dollar Resident Evil franchise in the 2000s. And more recently we have seen a jump in quality from the likes of Fallout, Halo, and a much better Super Mario Bros movie that grossed over $1 billion. With production companies now looking more than ever at the next video game franchise to make into a TV show or movie, one immediately stands out, Helldivers 2.
We already know that the premise would work as a TV show or movie, as its main inspiration, Starship Troopers, was adapted into a successful movie in 1997. Paramount Pictures also brought Microsoft’s iconic Halo franchise to Amazon Prime TV, another series that shares some similarities to Helldivers. The game’s publisher, Sony, recently brought The Last of Us to HBO and it became the most critically acclaimed adaptation of all time. Although there has been no news on whether a TV or movie could happen, it does seem inevitable, and a new fan film gives us a look at what a Helldivers 2 show could look like.
A YouTube creator known as Camera Chronicles has posted a short Helldivers 2 fan-film, giving us a first look at what a TV show or movie or the breakout gaming franchise could look like.
In the short film, which clocks in at just under four minutes long, we see a lone Helldiver return to Malevelon where he removes his helmet and pays tribute to his friends that didn’t make it. He then leaves their dog tags on a rock and boards his shop as the film cuts to black.
Although there is no action or dialogue in the film, it is very well produced and gives us a glimpse at what it could like if Sony decides to greenlight an official project.
The creator paid tribute to Helldivers 2 and its creators by saying “Shoutout to Arrowhead Game Studios for making an incredibly fun game. Just when I thought we were entering a true dark age of video games, Arrowhead released a $40 banger of a game that deserves every penny it earns.”
