Helldivers 2 currently features two factions, the Automatons, and Terminids, and it is believed that The Illuminate will be coming to the game in the future. These factions give players more choice as to what type of enemy that they face to better suit different play styles. It has become clear that the Terminids are much more popular, with many players refusing to switch to the Automatons, even to complete Major Orders.

U/prismatic_raze took to Reddit to discuss one of the reasons why many players prefer the fight the Terminids rather than the Automatons, ragdolling. “Since this game came out, bugs have been the more popular faction for divers to fight,” they said.
“Some attribute this to the Starship Troopers fantasy while others argue bots are just more difficult. While I think these two notions are factors, the ultimate reason is that bots have more mechanics that feel both unfair and unfun.”
Diving into ragdolling in Helldivers 2, the Reddit user detailed how many enemies can cause the effect which sends players into the air and removes all ability to control the character. “The biggest offender of these mechanics is ragdolling. By my count, the bots have 8 units that can ragdoll us Helldivers: Gunships, Cannon Towers, Tanks, Rocket Devastators, Hulk Bruisers, Factory Striders, Rocket Marauders, and the grenades that other Marauders throw. Not to mention other sources of ragdolling inherent to the map like landmines, ledges higher than 1 meter, and hostile plant life.”
“Ragdolling animations are unfun because they remove player agency. In many cases, a single ragdoll is a death sentence because it gives enemies like the Heavy Devastator time to take aim and gun you down. To make it more frustrating, the sheer number of enemy types who can ragdoll Helldivers means that you may not be able to recover from the animation before getting launched by a new ragdoll source.”
It is one of the more frustrating aspects of Automaton missions, especially at higher difficulties when there are dozens of enemies surrounding you at any one time, getting ragdolled can often result in you being killed. Whether Arrowhead Game Studios addresses it remains to be seen, but it does make sense as to why some players choose to avoid Automaton missions, as with the Terminids it is more of a run-and-gun style rather than trying to avoid rocket for 40 minutes.
But, if you want to take part in the current Major Order and do your bit for democracy and the Galactic War, you will need to spend some time in Automaton missions for now as Super Earth has sent players to “split Automaton forces in two” by cutting off the supply lines in the Andromeda Sector. If you’re used to fighting the Terminids, you may need to optimize your loadout for the robots.
