Splatoon 3 – what to expect

The third in the family friendly shooter series, the new entry will include classic multiplayer team-based Turf War action. There’ll be new maps, and new weapons to get to grips with, such as the Fish Stick and the Flipper Flopper.

However, there’s also some new & returning modes too. First off, is the return of Salmon Run, a co-operative wave based mode. In its new Next Wave guise, players will fight off waves of enemies before facing off against tough Boss Salmonids.

In addition, a full single player story mode will be a part of Splatoon 3. Though there was a single player mode in the previous entry, it came as DLC. This time around, ‘Return of the Mammalians’ will be baked in from the off and sees players as Agent 3, venturing into the new lands of Alterna to defeat the Octarian army.

Splatoon 3 will also include a new card-collecting minigame. Somewhere between a TCG and Tetris, Table Turf Battle will be a 1v1 minigame, played against NPCs. We’re promised more details on that in the future.

Between matches, you’ll be able to go shopping in Splatsville. There’ll be a range of shops to spend in-game currency, with some of these items offering special abilities. You’ll be able to change these abilities thanks to a handy NPC.

The game will also feature ranked modes and private modes for solo and team play. There’ll also be a lobby area with a Test Range, Ghosts of your online friends, the ability to watch & share Battle Replays and more.

There’ll be a Photo Mode, and the ability to make and share drawings also makes a return in Splatoon 3. A companion app, SplatNet 3, will also be available for mobile with its own set of features via the Nintendo Switch Online Mobile app.
