Sony is reportedly asking developers to start providing game trials for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers on full-price games.
That’s according to a report from Game Developer, citing a number of unnamed sources familiar with the platform holder’s plans. Apparently, Sony has begun contacting developers to inform them of the new requirements. These alleged requirements say that any developer releasing a game with a wholesale price of more than $34 must create a trial lasting at least two hours long.
The reasoning behind this scheme is the new PlayStation Plus offering. PlayStation will apparently be offering these trials on the most expensive, Premium tier of the new incarnation of the service. That’s in addition to the curated library of PS5, PS4 and a selection of older PlayStation games thrown in too.
According to the report, this trial requirement won’t apply retroactively to already released games. It also won’t be a requirement for PlayStation VR titles or games that have a wholesale cost of less than $34 either. Developers will apparently have up to three months after launch to provide their trial. Finally, these trials will need to be available for up to twelve months too.
PlayStation hasn’t commented on the veracity of this report at the time of writing. However, it first launched PlayStation 5 game trials back in October for Death Stranding: Director’s Cut and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. The new PlayStation Plus is set to launch in Europe on June 22.
