Infinity Ward and Raven Software are changing things up for the Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 Season 3 Battle Pass when the new season drops later this evening, with two major shake-ups in store.

The two new additions include a brand new premium offering, known as BlackCell and a more ‘streamlined’ way to unlock content in the standard Battle Pass by using a feature dubbed ‘automatic pathing’ – allowing players to earn rewards in a more simplistic manner.

In previous seasons, the Battle Pass has taken on the form of a map, where players can select certain rewards to purchase with their Battle Pass tokens they can earn over the course of a season. Each section of the map is made up of four smaller rewards, and a larger ‘High Profile Target’ reward which can only be unlocked once the prior four have been. Doing so then allows players to select the next region of the map to start working on, until all segments are unlocked.

While that remains, as detailed on the Call of Duty Blog, in Season 3 there’ll now also be an option to have their rewards chosen for them in a more traditional linear unlock path as seen in other similar games, such as Fortnite. Players can switch between the old method and the new one as often – or as little – as they like, swapping back and forth if they don’t mind what they earn after they’ve unlocked their preferred items.

Unlocks in this season’s Battle Pass include two new operators – Valeria and Alejandro – and new weapons like the one-shot kill FJX Imperium Sniper Rifle. Rewards further down the track include El Sin Nombre Operator skins for Valeria, and the Vaquero skin for Alejandro to name but two.

MW2 and Warzone 2 Season 3 – What is BlackCell?

BlackCell, meanwhile, is a new premium addition to the existing Battle Pass. In a separate blog post, the studios have revealed what players will get for the higher-priced option, which includes 20 Battle Token Tier Skips for said Battle Pass (with an additional 5 skips for PlayStation owners making a total of 25.)

On top of this, BlackCell purchasers get their own Operator – Atom. There’ll also be the Singularity Assault Rifle Pro-Tuned Blueprint, and a unique Vehicle Skin and Finishing Move. They’ll also be able to earn an additional 1,100 COD Points, that they can spend on anything else in the store.

The new BlackCell upgrade will set you back, however, costing around $29.99 USD by default (or your local equivalent.) The jury is out on whether it’s worth it, although the community so far has met the announcement of BlackCell with some scepticism. We’ll have to wait and see if it’s worth it when Season 3 of MW2 and Warzone 2 arrives later today, April 14.
