Helldivers 2 players thought the Automatons were gone for good following the completion of the Major Order that called their complete eradication. But just one day later the robots returned in greater numbers and stronger than before. Now, the Helldivers are fighting on the back foot with the current Major Order calling for players to defend planets from the robots. Defense missions have received criticism from the community in the past, but some changes have now made them a hit with players.

In a post on Reddit, U/KrilitzK praised Arrowhead Game Studios for the defense mission that has been included in the current Major Order saying,

“Holding back wave after wave of bots as we slowly lose ground and get pushed deeper into our lines, being forced to tactically fall back after realizing that holding a specific layer is no longer viable is just so incredibly fun. Even on difficulty 9 the frustrations that I usually get from that difficulty were just wiped away and overshadowed by just how good the mission feels to play.”

Some players have criticized Helldivers 2 in the past due to the defense missions being nothing more than fighting increasingly difficult enemies in a small arena. The new defense missions call for players to “Evacuate high-value assets” and have players holding defenses as long as possible while the evacuation takes place. The response to this new mission has been positive, with u/No-Course-1047 saying “I really hope they use this on bug maps as well. We can finally re-enact that one scene from Starship Troopers.”

As Helldivers 2 is still a new game, Arrowhead Game Studios is regularly adding fresh content to the game, including new mission types. It is likely that more liberation and defense missions will be added as time goes on, especially when new threats come to the game including The Illuminate. With all attention being on the Automatons, it is unlikely that new missions will come to the Terminid planets for a while, but once the story begins to focus on them again we could see some major changes taking place like we have for the robots.

With the Automatons looking for revenge and stronger than ever, it is more important than ever to make sure you’re in the best position possible to bring democracy to the galaxy.
