Helldivers 2 drones
There are two drones available in Helldivers 2, that can be unlocked via the Ship Management terminal. These are the Guard Dog and the Rover. Unlocking these stratagems requires you to be at leastt Level 10, and they each have a 480 second cooldown. So which one is better?
AX/AR-23 Guard Dog
The Guard Dog is a drone that comes with a Liberator assault rifle. It’s essentially a floating turret, and thanks to its 360 degree coverage, it can be useful for shooting enemies behind you that you haven’t seen yet.
That being said, it uses up its ammo very quickly, returning to your backpack afterwards to resupply.
AX/LAS-5 Guard Dog Rover
The Rover is similar to the standard Guard Dog, except instead of a Liberator it comes with a laser rifle. This is much more powerful than the Liberator, and also doesn’t need to resupply as often, making it a much better choice on paper.
One thing to watch out for, though, is friendly fire. As they fire a continuous beam and often sweep the laser across the battlefield to hit enemies, it often ends up hitting your teammates, too. If your teammates aren’t careful, you could end up killing them multiple times, so it requires good communication to use as well.
What is the best drone in Helldivers 2?
They both have their pros and cons, but it’s safe to say that the Rover is the best drone in Helldivers 2. It has significantly higher damage potential than the Guard Dog, and doesn’t need resupplying as often so you can keep it running for longer. You can further reduce to recharge time with Ship Modules, making it even better the more you upgrade.

Drones work best as a means of cleaning up smaller mobs. Focus your efforts on bigger enemies and let your drone protect you from any smaller ones that try and get too close.
While the Guard Dog doesn’t typically run as high of a risk of team killing, it doesn’t really exceed at anything in return, making it quite low-risk, low-reward. The Rover, on the other hand, has much higher potential, and the downside of potential friendly fire can be mitigated with good communication, making it the better choice in almost all situations.
