Which Guard Dog is better in Helldivers 2?
- The AX/LAS-5 Guard Dog Rover is better than the AX/AR-23 Guard Dog.
- This is because it uses a laser rifle that doesn’t resupply as often as the assault rifle of the AX/AR-23 Guard Dog.
- The latter has more power but needs to resupply quickly and has a higher risk of lethal friendly fire.
Having more firepower in Helldivers 2 is great and if a Guard Dog drone can take down threats, you need the best one for the job. But with two to choose from, which one should you be using?
Best Guard Dog in Helldivers 2 explained
The AX/LAS-5 Guard Dog Rover is the best Guard Dog choice in Helldivers 2. Its laser rifle has better damage potential than the AX/AR-23 Guard Dog’s assault rifle because it doesn’t need resupplying as often. You can further reduce its cooldown by 10% with the Hand Carts ship module, making it even better. Guard Dogs are drone stratagems that can be unlocked via the Ship Management terminal. AX/LAS-5 Guard Dog Rover
- Cost: 7500 Requisition credits at Level 10
- Call-In Time: 5 seconds
- Uses: Unlimited
- Cooldown Time: 480 seconds
The Rover is similar to the standard Guard Dog, except it comes with a laser rifle. This isn’t as powerful as the Guard Dog’s Liberator but doesn’t need to recharge as often, making it a much better choice on paper. One thing to watch out for, though, is friendly fire. As they fire a continuous beam and often sweep the laser across the battlefield in combat, it often ends up hitting your teammates, too. But it won’t outright kill you, usually. You can also treat it like a laser designator in foggy areas to fire at enemies. The downside of potential friendly fire can be mitigated with good communication, making it the better choice in almost all situations.
AX/AR-23 Guard Dog
- Cost: 7500 Requisition credits at Level 10
- Call-In Time: 5 seconds
- Uses: Unlimited
- Cooldown Time: 480 seconds
The Guard Dog is a drone that comes with a Liberator assault rifle, the same one from our best weapons list. It’s essentially a floating turret and thanks to its 360-degree coverage, it can be useful for shooting enemies behind you that you haven’t seen yet. It deals more damage than the Guard Dog Rover too. Players have reported being shot in the head by accident with it, meaning that the Rover is better in the friendly fire department. But it uses up its ammo very quickly, returning to your backpack to resupply often. The laser drone is a better pick against both Automatons and Terminids due to this. But remember that you’ll still need to handle armored threats like Chargers or Devastators as drones are ineffective against them.
