Fire has been at the center of criticism and controversy among the Helldivers 2 community after it was nerfed during the Escalation of Freedom update. Despite this, the latest Major Order is set to reward players with a new fire-based Stratagem, with some believing that it could signal that the mechanic is set to buffed once players complete the event.

U/Brohibi took to the Helldivers 2 sub-Reddit to share a theory that the current Major Order could lead to the recent fire changes being reverted to the pre-Escalation of Freedom update. The latest Major Order has tasked players with taking out 500,000 Automatons to gather the materials needed to create a new Orbital Napalm Barrage Stratagem.

Brohbi believes this is being done so the fire mechanic can be reversed as part of the lore, with them theorizing that “The new Major Order is to liberate Vernon wells and recover materials to make napalm for the napalm barrage. This would suggest that Super Earth has a napalm shortage and needs to cut back on use. This is an explanation for the fire change, Super Earth had to find a weaker substitute, such as propane (which resembles the current flamethrower effectiveness). Once the Major Order is complete, Arrowhead will revert the fire changes because there is no longer a shortage.”

This would make a lot of sense as a lot of attention has been on the fire mechanic in recent weeks since the Escalation of Freedom update, with most of it being negative. So, it would make little sense for Arrowhead to further put the spotlight on fire if it wasn’t going to be an improved version. We do know that the developers are looking at reverting fire mechanics as part of the 60-day roadmap that will fix many of the issues in the game, so it is possible that this could be part of it and a way to keep the changes as part of the storyline and part of the Galactic War.

So far, the Helldivers 2 community is on pace to complete this Major Order, after having blown through the previous one that tasked players with eradicating 750 million Terminids and 5 million Bile Titans. If you’re used to fighting the Terminids but shy away from fighting the Automatons, I highly recommend checking out our Helldivers 2 best weapons guide and best armor guide so you can build the ideal loadout to take down the robot army.
