Arrowhead Game Studios is currently in the middle of its recently announced 60-day roadmap, which is planned to fix many of the issues currently plaguing Helldivers 2. Based on previous updates and actions by the developers, many players are understandably incredibly sceptical as to whether these updates will improve the quality of life of the game. Recent comments from members of the team don’t fill me with hope, and it will be interesting to see whether our doubts are proven wrong.

Following the backlash from the Escalation of Freedom update, the Helldivers 2 developers revealed that they had created a 60-day roadmap to rectify these issues, rebalance the weapons, and overall just improve the gameplay experience. Twin Beard, the Helldivers 2 Community Manager, recently took to Discord to share some new insight on this roadmap, and it seems like we shouldn’t have high expectations and it is likely that most of the planned changes won’t come to fruition.

In a Q&A, Twin Beard revealed what the developers are planning on working on during the roadmap saying,

“There have been lots of hints on upcoming and/or planned stuff recently. Let’s see. Possibly more customization, possibly load-outs, possibly emote wheels, most likely a requisition system and/or alternatives for using surplus resources, probably a color mod system for armors, definitely expanded external beta testing, probably SEAF reinforcements in some shape or form, and as we’ve said before, overall a lot of work on tech stability, bug fixing and content such as streams, vlogs, and blogs. Et cetera.”

So far, we have seen one update released since the announcement of the 60-day roadmap, as well as one hotfix to fix an issue that the update caused, which is pretty standard at this point. Unfortunately, it may be a while before we see the next update as Arrowhead Game Studios has no date marked for when the next patch will drop, with Twin Beard saying

“We rarely talk about specific dates for updates, but I don’t think there’s any big one coming up. Right now we’re very focused on gathering out strength after summer vacay, finalizing our 60-day plan, and working on improvements,” he said. “There’s of course a lot of work going on at the same time in various areas, but still, we want to make sure we’re aligned and ideally more stable before launching bigger updates in the near future. Smaller stuff, possibly.”

Finally, Twin Beard noted that players will just have to wait for the roadmap to play out and that the improvements will take time saying

“It’s easy to forget that things take time. Regardless of what has happened before, fixing things is a process. Even if we had all the resources in the world, we can’t just press a “Fix all” button. The 60-day plan is something we hope can work for both us and the players. It puts pressure on us to plan and be able to show improvements after a set time period, while at the same time letting us take a step back and regroup.”

Although we don’t know exactly what is planned during the 60-day roadmap, seeing Twin Beard focus on mentioning new systems such as an emote wheel, custom load-outs, and a color mod system, rather than focusing on weapon balancing, fixing glitches and issues that are plaguing the game, just doesn’t really fill me with confidence. It seems that rather than focusing on the key points that will help rebuild confidence in the community, Arrowhead is instead looking to add a lot of fluff to mask the problems. I hope I’m wrong, but based on past history, something tells me I’m not.

The Escalation of Freedom update brought Helldivers 2 into Arc 2, furthering the Galactic War with the Automatons and Terminids. Unfortunately, it brought its share of issues, with many players criticizing the update due to numerous nerfs on popular weapons such as the Breaker Incendiary Shotgun, with the Arrowhead CEO claiming it was nerfed because it was too popular. With players scrambling to figure out what the new meta is, now is a great time to reoptimize your loadout.
